Chapter 61
Elena’s POV
Kade ripped my shirt off over my head and looked at my spine before I could stop him.
But this time, I didn’t try to stop him.
I knew there was no mark there. Somehow, when I had been put in this new body, there was no birthmark on my spine. Just smooth, unbroken, unmarred skin.
So I let him look. And I secretly reveled in the way he froze, hands stilling on my waist, and muttered, “What the hell?”
“Did you see what you wanted so badly?” I asked, turning away and grabbing my shirt. Kade looked puzzled. No, more than puzzled-he looked completely at a loss for words.
“If it’s not you, then why did you come here?” he asked.
I froze as I pulled my shirt over my head. The way he said it-it was as if he knew I would come here. He must have planned this.
I realize, then, with startling clarity, that the rumors about the baby must have been deliberately spread by Kade. He thought that, if I heard about the child, I would come running. But now that he thought I wasn’t Samantha, he couldn’t understand why I had shown up.
Which meant that my baby was probably dead after all.
The very thought just made me hate him even more. Of course Kade would lie about something like that just to get his way. Of course he would use our dead child to lure me out and capture me.
And I was the fool who fell for it.
But, by some grace of the Moon Goddess, I had no birthmark. Perhaps she knew this would happen and had given me some small advantage against Kade; or perhaps it was simply a coincidence.
Or so I thought. But Kade was never one to let go so easily, was he?
“How did you do that?” Kade asked then, eyes narrowing into two gray slits. “Did you burn off your birthmark or something?”
“No. I never had a birthmark. I swear, I’m not the woman you think I am.”
“Then why are you here?”
My heart thudded dangerously. I hadn’t thought about this ahead of time, but I needed an excuse. Some good reason to be here that had nothing to do with my child.
Thinking quickly, I took a step forward and reached out, touching his chest. His bare skin was warm and smooth beneath my palm. I hated how delicious he felt even now, knowing just how much I despised him.
“I came here for you, silly,” I said. The words came out of my mouth with effort, but strangely, they sounded smoother than I expected. “You’re my mate. I want you. I want to stay by your side!”
The moment the words left my mouth and I saw Kade staring at me, I wanted to take them back. I hated Kade enough as it was. I hated him even more now that I knew he had lied about our child to get his way. And yet, somehow, they sounded almost… convincing.

Kade’s POV
She didn’t have the birthmark.
Kade didn’t understand how this was possible. He’d spent so long thinking that this girl who looked so much like Samantha, only now with different hair, might actually be his dead mate somehow come back to life.
But she didn’t have the mark. And when he asked why she was here, she mentioned nothing about Ivy.
She just said that she… wanted him.
