Chapter 62
But now… Now, she was looking at him like he was the only thing in the world she could ever want. The lust in her eyes was unbearable for Kade to look at. If he gazed for too long, he might get pulled in and lose himself completely.
Taking a step back, Kade said, “You hated me before. Why act like you want me now?”
Elena sighed, dropping her hand back to her side. “I thought you only wanted me to be a replacement for your old mate-the one who died. The way you kept trying to link me to her didn’t help any, either. You’re still doing it.” She gestured toward her spine.
Kade pursed his lips, hating that she was right. This girl was certainly his mate, but perhaps she was just a second chance, and he had been an ass for constantly comparing her to a woman she wasn’t.
“But I just realized, after you last left Nightshade, that I couldn’t be without you,” Elena went on. “I decided that I would accept you the way you are, and maybe someday prove to you that while I’m not your original mate, I can still make you happy. I think we could be…” She looked down at her feet, then back up at him in that sultry way that made Kade’s pulse race. “…Good together.”
Kade’s throat bobbed. In the back of his mind, Ghost chuffed, “She has a point. If she’s our second chance, then perhaps we should take it; you two clearly have chemistry.”
“Shut up,”
“Kade thought back, but there was little heat in it. He knew his wolf was right. This woman was his mate, whether he wanted that to be the case or not. And she had come all this way…
Deep down, Kade couldn’t help but feel an instinctual desire to keep her close. With the mate bond pulsing between them like a live wire, it was strangely addictive. Intense.
Samantha had never manipulated the mate bond in this way before. As far as Kade knew, she only ever went out of her way to hide it.
But this woman… This woman was stroking it, strumming it like a guitar string attached to Kade’s heart. He was intrigued.
“You still broke into my home,” Kade said, hating how rough his voice sounded just then. He cleared his throat. “ Trespassing into pack territory-especially coming from an enemy pack-is already bad enough. But to break into my personal home?”
“I just wanted to surprise you.” Elena’s lips curved. “Besides, judging from the way you kissed me just now, I think you liked it.”
A low growl rumbled in Kade’s throat at the mere mention of the kiss. But he refused to be manipulated. She had broken the law. Trespassed. Broken into his home. And he’d found her in Ivy’s nursery. He was still suspicious of her, attraction or not.
“You will remain in Crescent Hollow until I decide what to do with you,” he said after a moment, buttoning his shirt with what few buttons hadn’t popped off and rolled in various directions across the floor. “Under strict watch, of course.”
Ghost chuckled. “Under your watch, or a guard’s?”
“A guard’s.” Kade clenched his jaw. “This isn’t like that.
“No?”
“No. I’m only concerned about a potential criminal… nothing more.”
