Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 65

Chapter 65

Kade’s POV

Kade’s attraction to Elena was almost unbearable. The feeling of her body pressed against his, her warm skin emanating through her thin nightgown, the way she threw herself into his arms…

He couldn’t take it. Something was off about this. The attraction was too much-and so unlike what Kade had come to expect.

This woman wasn’t just acting completely unlike the way she had before-she wasn’t acting like Samantha at all. The change between the two was like night and day, so stark that his uncertainty returned twofold.

What was happening? Who was she? Was this an elaborate act, or was the situation really as simple as his second- chance mate wanting him?

Carefully, Kade gripped Elena’s arms and pried her off of him, holding her at arms’ length. She sniffled, looking up at him with teary eyes like a small, frightened child might look at their protector.

“A… nightmare,” he said flatly, studying her expression for signs of deception. He found none.

Elena nodded vehemently. “Yes, I dreamt-” Her voice caught, and she shook her head, looking away. “I can’t even say it. It was awful. I just woke up and knew I had to find you.”

Curious, Kade glanced up at the guard.

“I made sure her door was locked,” the guard pointed out. “And I was only gone for a minute or so. She must have picked the lock.”

Kade’s brows shot skyward, but Elena was adamant. “N-No! I didn’t pick the lock. I wouldn’t even know how to do that! The door was unlocked! I simply got up and ran!”

Unsure who to believe, Kade looked between the guard and the woman who looked too much like Samantha. Finally, he made a decision and released Elena, stepping back.

“Take her back to her room. And next time you need to step away, find a replacement for your post. She can’t be alone.”

“Yes, Sir,” the guard said before escorting Elena out of the room. Kade hardly dared to breathe until their footsteps faded down the hallway.

By then, Kade had given up on finishing his work for the night. His mind was racing far too much to focus, and he wanted to check on Ivy. So he returned to his room, expecting to find the child asleep in her bassinet.

But when he entered the room, he gasped upon seeing a woman standing there, holding Ivy in her arms. An Omega.

“What are you doing?” Kade hissed, crossing the room in two long strides. He practically snatched his daughter from the Omega’s arms.

The Omega’s eyes widened. “She was fussing, Sir. I rocked her for a bit, nothing more.”

Kade looked down at the tiny bundle in his arms. She was sleeping peacefully now, and seemed unharmed. But his protective instincts wouldn’t let this rest; he sent the Omega away, and by the next morning, he had made a decision.

“It’s unsafe for Ivy to remain here, where anyone can walk in on her,” Kade said, addressing his small council of

advisors the following morning. “After the intrusion last night, and everything else, I think it’s best if she’s moved to a secure facility for the time being-and I don’t want anyone to breathe a word of her existence to anyone who doesn’t know about her already.”

Ajax looked concerned. “There are a few around the pack who know about her existence. The gossip can’t be contained forever.”

Kade knew that-of course he did. He still suspected that Elena was really Samantha, who had come here after hearing about Ivy. Somehow, the news had reached her all the way in Nightshade.

“Well, we have to do our best,” Kade said. “Spread rumors that the child’s existence was made up, if you must. For now, she has to remain a secret.”

Ajax nodded and stood, leaving to immediately begin handling the matter. Alistair cleared his throat, drawing Kade’s attention. “And what about the young woman in the attic?” he asked. “What will you do with her?”

Kade pinched the bridge of his nose and shut his eyes for a moment. “I haven’t decided yet. She claims she came here because she wants to be by my side-she is my mate.’

Alistair and his wife exchanged looks. “You’re not considering marrying her instead of Serena, are you?”

“Not necessarily. And even if I were, I never said I would definitively marry Serena, either. It was only a discussion.”

“Perhaps, but she and her family expect it by now,” Priscilla pointed out.

“Serena would make a good match,” Alistair added. “She comes from an Alpha family, and the marriage could ease tensions after what happened with Samantha. The girl in the attic is merely an ex-rogue, isn’t she?”

“Allegedly,” Kade said. The jury was still out on that one.

Priscilla nodded. “Well, then she’s no match for an Alpha. Besides, she’s a criminal. I suggest you send her right back to Nightshade before you get too entangled. An Alpha shouldn’t be entertaining multiple women at once, regardless.”

“Yes,” Alistaire agreed, bobbing his head. “And returning her to her pack unscathed despite her crime would be a show of good faith to Alpha Samson, as well-thus resolving your petty declaration of war while you’re at it.”

Kade’s jaw clenched. It wasn’t a “petty” declaration. He never truly intended to start a war; he was just certain that Samantha was in hiding and was trying everything to draw her out.

But now…

“I’m not making any decisions just yet,” he finally said. He pushed his chair back and stood. “For now, I’m still considering my options when it comes to everything, not just the marriage.”

Priscilla stood, face pinching into a look of dissatisfaction. “You have to decide whether to propose to Serena soon, Kade. And I really must implore you not to-”

“I’ll make the decision that I feel is right when the time is right.”

Without another word, Kade turned and left.

Truthfully, he had considered a marriage to Serena; she was a viable choice, although he didn’t love her, nor did he love anyone other than Ivy. But now that Elena was here… He felt more uncertain than ever before.

Elena was his second-chance mate. Whatever residual twin bond he shared with Serena paled in comparison to
