Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 64

Chapter 64

“What was that, by the way?” Ava asked, perturbed.

“I should be the one asking you that question. You manipulated the bond. Made me kiss him.”

Ava paused, then replied, “I’m sorry. I couldn’t help it; it’s not easy holding back around our mate all the time. But I meant after-when you told him you wanted him.”

I swallowed around the hard lump that formed in my throat at the very mention.

Those moments in Kade’s study, I… hadn’t been myself. At first, it felt like a defense mechanism, a way to keep him from suspecting the true reason behind my visit.

But toward the end of that interaction, something about it had felt far too natural for comfort. I had batted my eyelashes and looked up at him wantingly and it had all happened so fast…

I decided to blame it on necessity. It was certainly easier than any other explanation.

After my bath, I changed into a nightgown that I found in the dresser. The fabric was slightly thin and sheer, but not uncomfortable. When I crawled into bed, I found that the mattress was comfortable as well.

Sleep didn’t come, though. Not that I wanted it to. I laid there for some time, hoping to hear the guard leave so I could try to find a way to sneak out. I still needed to find out if my child was alive, and I needed to escape before Kade figured out the truth and fully imprisoned me again.

Eventually, it happened. I heard the door creak open, and I pretended to be sound asleep while the guard checked on me. Satisfied, he closed the door and locked it again, and I heard him leave-likely to take a piss. I decided to take my chances then.

Quietly padding over to the door, I pressed my ear to the wood, hearing his footsteps echo down the stairs. I would have to move quickly.

I slipped a bobby pin out of my hair and began working at the lock. I was no expert in lockpicking, but I’d read about it in books before, and the locks were old in this house-fairly simple to pick.

Finally, after some effort, the lock popped open. The hallway was empty. I hurried down the hall and down the stairs, looking around wildly for my next destination-for any sign, any at all, that my child was still here.

I didn’t make it far before I heard the toilet flush. Cursing, I looked around for a place to hide, but it was too late. The guard stepped out of the bathroom and spotted me immediately.

“How the hell-get over here!” he hissed, storming up to me and grabbing my wrist. His grip was just as strong as Kade’s, his hands rough from years of holding weapons. I writhed against him and tried to get away, but he caught me easily and dragged me toward Kade’s study, where light was still spilling out from under the door.

He thrust me into the room with such force that I fell to my knees, causing Kade to look up from behind his desk.

The irony wasn’t lost on me, of course. How many times had I been shoved just like this before? How many times had I fallen to my knees in front of Kade? By seeking out my child, I had only subjected myself to another lifetime of this treatment.

“She escaped while I was in the bathroom,” the guard said, folding his arms. “Found her in the hallway.”

Kade slowly stood, looking down his nose at me, just as he had so many times before. His tall form almost seemed to completely fill the room, and for a moment, I was back in my days as a slave-small, trembling, awaiting my punishment.
