Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 67

Chapter 67

Elena’s POV

I walked around the corner and saw a familiar face-an Omega who I used to see around the pack. She was fair- haired and petite, with a mousey, timid look about her. Nellie.

We rarely talked before-I didn’t talk to anyone, really-but I remembered her because of the way the others treated her. They bullied her, just like they bullied me. And now it was happening again.

Ironically, it was one of the same Gammas who used to torment me in the past.

I didn’t recall his name. I only recalled his face: mean and ugly, constantly twisted with hatred and malicious humor. He was lanky and skinny, and always liked to take things out on the Omegas because he was on the lower rung of social standing amongst the Gammas.

Right now, he was standing over Nellie, sneering as she scrubbed a stain on the floor. She was wearing a healer’s uniform, but the Gamma was making her clean the kitchen. Just as she was finishing up, he smirked and kicked the bucket of dirty water, splashing it all over the floor and all over Nellie’s uniform.

Anger bubbled up within me as I watched the scene unfold. I remembered all too well what it was like to be treated like this; constantly feeling helpless, knowing that no one would come to my rescue, being humiliated and degraded at every turn.

During those days as a slave, no one ever-ever-stood up for me. Not even once.

During those days, not even Nellie had ever stood up for me. I wasn’t sure if she would have, even if she could have. But it didn’t matter. I could not stand here and watch someone else get treated like I had.

“What are you doing?” I asked, stopping in the doorway.

The Gamma glanced up at me and looked at me with confusion. “Who are you?”

“It doesn’t matter.” I planted my hands on my hips. “She’s got a healer’s uniform on. Why are you making her scrub the floor?”

“Because she’s a dumb bitch who made me spill my coffee,” the Gamma snorted. “Besides, it’s not your business.”

I ignored him and walked over to Nellie. “Do you work in the infirmary?” I asked.

She nodded, sniffling, still holding the sponge. “Yes. I was coming to bring Miss Debbie her daily medicine and I bumped into him. But it’s okay. It is my fault-”

“No, it’s not. It sounds like an accident.” I crouched and took the sponge from her hand, dropping it in the bucket, then helped her to her feet. She trembled a little, looking between me and the Gamma warily.

I turned to the Gamma. “Aren’t you supposed to be on duty, anyway? Last I heard, Gammas don’t belong in the Alpha’s personal kitchen at lunchtime, sipping coffee like they own the place.”

The Gamma bristled indignantly. “And who are you to tell me where I can and can’t be? I’ve never seen you before.”

Of course he would say that. Of course this fucker wouldn’t remember me-he had no problem tormenting me when I was a slave, constantly abused me and made fun of me, and yet he couldn’t even remember my face.

“Like I said, it doesn’t matter who I am.” I kicked the bucket his way, ensuring the water splashed across his

shoes. I remembered how he used to make me shine his shoes. How he would deliberately spill food on them, blame me for it, then force me to clean them.

Once, he tried to make me do it with my tongue, but I refused. That time, he punched me in the mouth for disobeying.

“Well, then it doesn’t matter if I listen to you or not, bitch.” The Gamma kicked the bucket back my way. Cold water splashed onto the hem of my dress, but I didn’t look at it. Nellie gasped.

Suddenly, my guard cleared his throat. The Gamma’s eyes snapped up, and my guard slowly shook his head. He said nothing, but the threat in his eyes was clear: back off.

“Oh.” The Gamma pulled his head back and looked at me warily. “I didn’t know you were Alpha Kade’s new Luna.”

I blinked. He thought I was Kade’s “new Luna”? Which meant…

Did Kade have someone lined up already?

My mind immediately went back to the flirtatious conversation I’d overheard last night. Serena. At the time, I wasn’t sure if that was what was going on, but now… Maybe he really was planning on marrying her.

It only made sense, after all. As my twin, Serena did share a bond with Kade, even if it was faint and weak compared to a real mate bond. It was an evolutionary advantage given to twins-back when offspring were of the utmost importance and wolves might need a backup in case their mate died

But despite this, it made my blood boil. Everything that had happened to me was Serena’s fault, and now she was walking into Kade’s arms like she hadn’t been the one to destroy everything. And Kade was too stubborn to realize that he was being played.

I didn’t bother correcting the Gamma, though, even if he was mistaken. I simply jerked my head toward the door.”

Get out.”

The Gamma excused himself and walked away. Nellie and I watched him go. She shuddered, then turned to me.

“Um… Thank you, Luna. But you didn’t have to do that.”

“I wanted to.” I didn’t bother correcting her, either. My eyes then caught the badge on her uniform again, the tiny serpent winding around a cane that denoted a healer. “So, you’re a healer?”

She shook her head. “Not yet. I’m just an apprentice.” She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small vial with some liquid in it. “I’m supposed to give Miss Debbie her medicine at lunchtime.”

“I see…” I considered this for a moment, recalling Debbie’s condition last night. I wanted to offer to help using my ability, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to do much yet. But then, suddenly, an idea crossed my mind; if Nellie worked in the infirmary, then she might know what happened to my child. “Hey, so you spend lots of time in the infirmary, right?” I asked.

She nodded. “Yes. Why?”

My mind raced. I didn’t want to alert anyone to my plan, so I said vaguely, “Have you ever delivered a baby?”
