Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 68

Chapter 68

Elena’s POV

“Alpha Kade!” Nellie stepped away from me and curtsied when Kade entered the room, averting her gaze respectfully-just as I used to do once as a slave.

Now, I held Kade’s eyes, refusing to show weakness. It was no easy feat, fighting the instinct to defer myself, but somehow I managed it.

Nellie held up the vial of medicine and said, “I was just coming to give Miss Debbie her afternoon medicine.”

“I can see that.” Kade glanced between both of us. His hair seemed a little windswept, and a chill seemed to emanate from his jacket even with all this space between us. He had just come in from outside, likely out checking on the pack borders or performing other duties.

“But what are you two doing in the kitchen?” he asked, looking at me warily. “And why is there coffee and water all over the floor?”

My mind scrambled to come up with an excuse, not having expected Kade to walk in when I was prying for information, and I started, “I was just-”

“She helped me,” Nellie said, gesturing to me. “One of the Gammas was giving me a hard time, making me scrub the floor. She stood up for me.

Kade quirked a brow at that and looked at me-a little less warily this time. “Is that so?”

I opened my mouth to reply, but my guard nodded and cut in, “The Gamma was acting completely out of line, Sir. He was being cruel to the Omega and intentionally made more of a mess for her to clean up, even though her work is in the infirmary, not the kitchen.”

“I see.” Kade’s eyes narrowed. “What was his name? I don’t tolerate bullying around here.”

I would have laughed out loud at that, would it not have given me away. Kade? Not tolerating bullying? He had let the Gammas torment me to no end when I was a slave here!

But now, Kade seemed utterly serious. In fact, he seemed somewhat angry. It took me completely by surprise. Was this a new development, I wondered, or had he always been like this? I never recalled him being around for the bullying before, but I wasn’t sure.

“It was Gamma Mark,” the guard replied. “I can fetch him, if you’d like.”

“No need. I just mindlinked him.” Kade waited patiently, and for a few moments, the room was silent save for the clock ticking on the wall. I stared at Kade the entire time, hoping my confusion wasn’t written too plainly across my face. Admittedly, I was curious as to how this was going to unfold.

A minute later, the Gamma in question, Mark, stepped into the room and stopped short. He blanched when he saw all of us standing there, especially Kade, but bowed. “You called, Alpha Kade?”

“Is it true that you were forcing one of the infirmary staff to scrub the floor?” Kade asked without preamble.

The Gamma paled even further. “Well, she made me spill my coffee-”

“And what, pray tell, were you doing drinking coffee here?” Kade cut him off. “This is my private kitchen, not the communal lounge. Besides, I tightened security around the pack, and thus you should have been on duty, should you not?”

“I was just passing through…”

“Bullshit.” Kade folded his arms. “Get back to the packhouse immediately. You’re on toilet scrubbing duty for the rest of the day. Furthermore, if I hear about you bullying anyone else from now on, you’re permanently demoted. Am I clear?”

The Gamma didn’t reply right away, too frozen to speak.

Kade took a step closer to him. “Am. I. Clear?”

I stiffened at the cold authority in Kade’s tone. The sound of it made my nerves freeze and alight all at once. I hated the way that, even now, the rumble in his voice made my body instinctively react. Hated how stupidly fucking handsome he was when he was pissed.

Mark immediately nodded. “Y-Yes, Sir,” he said, bowing several times in deference. “I’ll get right on it, Sir. I won’t cause anymore trouble.”

And then he was gone. I was still completely frozen to my spot with my mouth hanging open in shock.

I never expected Kade to punish someone like that over something so trivial. It was completely misaligned with the Kade I had come to know.

“Is there a problem, or are you just catching flies?” Kade asked, shrugging off his jacket.

I quickly snapped my mouth shut. “No, it’s just… It’s nice to see an Alpha standing up for the lower classes, that’s all.” I didn’t mention the fact that I was really just surprised that Kade gave a shit about such things. Where was that attitude when I lived here?

“Does Alpha Samson not do the same?” he scoffed.

“No, he does, it’s just…”

“You expect me to do the opposite. Because I’m a warmongering bastard.”

My face reddened at the reminder of what I’d said during our last meeting, but somehow, I managed to force my face into neutrality. “A little,” I admitted with a wry smirk. That part, at least, wasn’t a lie.

Nellie, realizing what she was standing in the middle of, quickly curtsied again. “Well, I should check on Debbie. Thank you, Alpha. And you, Luna.” She then turned and hurried out of the room. Kade watched her as he left, then turned to me.

“I guess word has gotten out,” he said gruffly.

“About what?”

He waved his hand dismissively. “My potential future Luna looks eerily like you. I guess people are starting to make assumptions.”

So it was Serena. Potential future Luna; did that mean it wasn’t set in stone yet? I drew my brows together slightly, wondering what exactly was going on-and also why the very thought made some of the tension slip from my shoulders.

But then I noticed Kade was watching me, probably trying to see if I had a reaction to the mention of my twin sister, so I smoothed my expression over again.

“Oh. The Gamma said the same thing,” I said with an airy laugh. “Well, maybe that’s for the best.”
