Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 70

Chapter 70

“Befitting of a warmonger,” I teased. If my jab amused Kade, he didn’t show it.

We ate in silence for a few moments. My mind raced with what to say next-some kind of segue into the topic of my baby. I had practiced what to say, but admittedly, now that I was here, sitting directly next to Kade, I wasn’t sure where to begin.

Finally, I asked, “So. You’re planning to marry your dead mate’s twin sister?”

It was a blunt question, but perhaps that was exactly the sort of question Elena would ask-not Samantha. Kade hesitated for a moment, his expression betraying nothing, then replied, “It’s been in consideration.”

“Do you intend to have heirs right away? With whomever you choose to be your wife, of course.”

Kade snapped his gaze to me at that. “Such a forward question.”

I speared a carrot on my fork. “It’s a reasonable question, don’t you think? I already saw your nursery. If I’m going to compete for your hand in marriage, then I’d like to know what I’m getting into.”

Kade studied me for a moment, no doubt searching for some kind of tell on my face. He would find none. I kept my expression perfectly pleasant, and even smiled at the sweet, nutty taste of the carrot.

Finally, he replied, “Heirs would be ideal for any Alpha.”

“That’s right. Every Alpha needs an heir for the stability of the pack.” I set down my fork and took a sip of my wine. It was dry and rich, exactly the kind I liked. “I’m assuming that’s why you’re looking to marry so soon after your first mate died. You don’t have an heir yet, and your pack is growing impatient. Right? You don’t have an heir?”

Kade’s brow quirked. “You seem very interested in whether I have a current heir or not.”

“You’re probing too much, and too quickly,” Ava cut in. “Back off a little, or he’ll start to suspect you.”

She was right. I forced another smile. “Can you blame me? What woman doesn’t want to ensure that her children are set in life?”

“What do you mean?” Kade asked.

“Alphas are stronger with their true mates by their side, and same goes for their children. Everyone knows that children produced between two fated mates possess superior wolves. A firstborn between us would be a formidable future leader of the pack. But our child couldn’t be a leader if there’s already an heir in the picture.”

Kade was silent for a long moment. I prayed that he wouldn’t hear my heart pounding wildly. Ava growled with disappointment; that was too close. Too bold.

Finally, he leaned closer to me, the table creaking under his elbows. The scent of whiskey and roast quail wafted off his breath in a dizzying wave, making me twist my hands into the velvet of my skirt under the table.

Those gray eyes seemed to look right through me. Right through my facade.

For the first time, his lips quirked upward. But it wasn’t a smile.

“So. You want me to choose you over Serena?” Kade whispered, and his voice was like silk-tipped daggers dragging against the inside of my skull. “You want to give me an heir? A firstborn?”

No. I didn’t want any of that. But I wanted to keep my identity a secret and find out what happened to my baby, so I nodded.
