Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 69

Chapter 69

Elena’s POV

“Dinner?” I blurted out.

Kade paused. “Yes. Dinner.”

I hadn’t been expecting that, but it felt like an opportunity to get some answers-so although the thought of sharing a meal with Kade made me want to gag, I accepted the invitation. Not that it seemed I had much of a choice, anyway. I was still his prisoner, after all.

Later, I returned to my room and searched for something to wear. I found a simple but finely made dress in the back of the closet-a long, velvet number with off-the-shoulder sleeves and a sweetheart neckline. The fabric hugged my body in all the right places, and the color suited my silver hair.

For a simple dinner, it was probably overkill. But nothing was ever truly simple with Kade. And I needed him to let his guard down a little if I wanted any information about my baby.

I spent the rest of the day preparing for the dinner like it was the most important meal of my life. I scrubbed myself from head to toe in the bathtub, carefully styled my hair, and practiced the questions I would ask. There wasn’t much at my disposal in the way of makeup or perfume, but I didn’t need it. My wolf’s scent would be enough; I told her to lay it on thick.

“This is a dangerous game you’re playing,” Ava chided as I made my way down the stairs. The house was already dark, the sun having long since dipped behind the mountain. “If you’re not careful, you’ll both fall.”

“I won’t fall. I hate him. He’s the one who will fall, and tell me everything I want to know.”

Ava chuffed at that, unconvinced but not

At exactly eight o’clock, I stepped into the dining room. The long oaken table was set with candles that dripped wax onto the wood, covered silver platters sitting on either end. Kade was standing by the bar in the corner, pouring himself a glass of amber liquid.

“Drink?” he asked without looking up.

“Yes. I’d like a glass of red, please.” I didn’t want to drink-didn’t want to cloud my senses when I needed to focus on the game of social chess I knew I was about to play-but I knew that declining would start to raise the hairs of suspicion.

As I took a seat, Kade walked over to the table with a bottle in hand. I watched him as he poured the wine into my glass, noticing the way his nostrils flared faintly at my scent. I leaned a little closer and touched his wrist when the glass was full enough.

“Thank you.” I forced a smile and batted my eyelashes up at him.

Kade merely nodded and took his seat at the other end of the table. We felt miles apart. Too far. I needed to be closer.

Wordlessly, I picked up my tray, utensils, and glass, and stood.

“What are you doing?” Kade asked, staring as I walked down the length of the table. I set my things down at the spot directly beside him and sat.

“Much better,” I grinned, scooching my chair in. “Now, we can actually have an intimate conversation.”

Perhaps it was just the flickering candlelight, but I swore I saw Kade’s face flush faintly.

I removed the lid covering my food and gasped. The juiciest, most decadent quail I had ever seen sat on the tray, glistening with herbs and butter. Tiny, speckled eggs were arranged around it in a semi-circle, and the roasted carrots were a brilliant shade of orange.

“Hunted just this morning,” Kade said, already cutting into his meat. “I went out myself.”

I glanced at him as I cracked open one of the eggs. A golden yolk ran out, seeping into the meat. “You hunt for your own food?” This was the first I’d heard of him doing that.

“Sometimes,” he replied. I popped a piece of meat into my mouth and moaned softly at the flavor. “Good?”

“Delicious.” That was probably the first non-lie I had told to him all day. “Did you cook it yourself, too?”

Kade snorted. “No. I’m not much of a cook.”
