Elena’s POV

The following morning was much the same as all the others. I seemed to have developed a strange sort of routine in my new prison-wake, bathe, dress in clothes that weren’t mine, then leave in search of answers.

But this time, when I went to leave my room, I was surprised to find that the door was locked. When I knocked, the guard opened it a moment later and looked at me curiously. “Yes? Did you need something?”

“Can I leave?” I asked. “I want to stretch my legs and get breakfast.”

The guard hesitated, then shook his head. “Sorry, but not today. The Alpha has asked me to keep you in your room for now.”

“Why?”

“I can’t say.”

I frowned, wondering if I had done something wrong. Immediately, my mind went to the conversation I had had with Nellie yesterday-had she told Kade that I was looking for information? Did Kade know who I really was now?

When the guard left me alone, I paced my room for a while, fearing the worst. Every creak in the floorboards outside made me jump, fearing that he would come to reveal everything he knew and punish me.

But to my surprise, Kade never came to my room to speak to me for the rest of the morning, so I began to wonder if his reasons for keeping me locked up today were about something else entirely.

Actually, nothing of note happened all morning. Someone brought me a breakfast of coffee, toast, and eggs— hardly a meal for an ex-slave who was about to become a slave again-which I picked at while I read a book.

Kade never appeared. In fact, he seemed to be out all day as usual, and I was left completely undisturbed.

Interestingly, though, I did notice a few unfamiliar cars coming and going down in the driveway, and I heard female voices echoing through the house. I couldn’t make out what they were saying, but it sounded like people were bustling around more than usual.

I thought little of it, figuring it was just typical pack business that had nothing to do with me. Perhaps Kade was planning some kind of event and wanted to keep me, his little prisoner, out of sight.

Around midday, it happened.

I heard shouts outside by the gates. It sounded like men arguing, and the horn of a car honking.

Setting aside my book, I hurried over to the window, where I saw several Gammas running across the lawn. There was a dark SUV parked by the gate and a man whose features I couldn’t make out from here arguing with a guard. All I could see was that he had blond hair, and judging from the commotion, he was trying to get through the gates but the guards were forcing him back.

A moment later, I heard my own guard curse under his breath, and then his footsteps pounded down the stairs.

“Hello?” I called out, hurrying over to the door. “What’s going on?”

There was no answer. It seemed my guard had abandoned me; indeed, when I looked out the window again, I saw him running to meet the rest of the group.

Curious, I tried the door and gasped softly. It was unlocked.

I probably should have stayed put, just in case Kade or my guard returned, but I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to find my child.

Kicking my shoes off so as not to make any sound, I hurried out of my room and down to the second floor in my socks. I looked around frantically for something, anything, that could be of use-Nellie, perhaps, or an unlocked door I hadn’t entered before. I tried Kade’s study, but the door was firmly locked.

My eyes then caught Kade’s private quarters up ahead. I hadn’t set foot in that room since I was a slave, and the only times I did had been during those nights full of torment and loneliness. The thought of entering that room now made my heart race more than it already was.

But if I was going to find anything of use, then it would likely be in there.

Carefully, I tried the door. It was unlocked. I cracked the door open just enough to peek inside, and found the room empty. I stepped inside.

The room was exactly as I remembered it. Spacious, dark drapes covering the windows, an enormous four-poster bed. I tried not to look at the bed, and tried not to inhale Kade’s scent permeating the entire room.

I looked first through his bedside table drawer, but found nothing; just a well-worn book on politics and a pair of reading glasses. Then, I checked under the bed, in his closet, and the trunk at the end of the bed. Nothing of note.

And then I saw it: something I hadn’t seen before sitting between the bed and the window, tucked into the corner. I almost missed it, because it was covered with a dark sheet, but something about it intrigued me.

I walked over to it and pulled the sheet away. My eyes widened as the sheet fell, revealing a baby’s bassinet.

Empty.

Strange… He had an empty nursery with a doll in the crib, and now an empty bassinet in his room?

Something like hope began to flicker to life in my chest. What if my baby was indeed here somewhere, alive? What if Kade was just hiding her from me?

I hardly dared to think it could be true for fear of it not being so, but I couldn’t help it. If my baby was alive, then this entire visit wouldn’t have been in vain! I had to find my child!

But before I could do anything else, I heard the sound of the front door opening and closing downstairs. Fearing that my guard had returned, I quickly placed the sheet back over the bassinet just as I had found it, then slipped out of the room and hurried back to mine.

Serena’s POV

Serena peeked through the crack in her door, watching with interest as Elena slipped out of Kade’s room and hurried down the hall. She looked like a cat running through the house, glancing furtively over her shoulder and not making a sound on the hardwood floors.

When Serena glimpsed her face looking over her shoulder, everything snapped into place.
