Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 75

Chapter 75

Kade’s POV

Kade lifted his hand to knock on the front door, but hesitated.

The ring in his pocket felt heavy, like a leaden weight pulling him down.

Did he really want to do this?

To Kade, marriage hadn’t been at the forefront of his mind since he was a teenager. He hadn’t even entertained the notion of romance ever since his parents died, Debbie was raped, and everything changed forever.

He had little time for such things. He had a pack to run on his own and a broken sister who got sicker by the day.

And then he found out that Samantha was his mate. For the briefest moment, something had stirred within him, and then she died.

Now… There was Elena.

Elena, who looked so much like Samantha. Elena, his second chance mate. Elena, who he didn’t trust as far as he could throw her, who might very, well be trying to manipulate him for her own gain-or perhaps she wasn’t who she said she was at all.

Kade didn’t know what to think about her anymore, but he knew one thing: the attraction he felt toward her, the pull of the mate bond he never wanted, was too much to ignore.

But now he was going to propose to Serena. He had already made the promise to her parents, and to the Elders. He couldn’t go back on it now.

So Kade knocked on the door. He waited patiently. He entered the home, walked past Serena’s grinning father, past her tired-looking mother. He walked into the parlor, where Serena was perched on the edge of a chair, embroidering something on a pillow.

He walked up to Serena and dropped to one knee beside her. He took her hand in his and held out the ring.

“Serena, will you be my Luna?”

The words sounded far away and hollow, even to Kade’s ears. Serena beamed. She threw her arms around her neck and shouted something. But Kade couldn’t make out what she said. He only heard the sound of his own wolf howling in frustration.

“You fell for Elena, and yet you choose this woman?” Ghost growled. “What is wrong with you? Why not choose your second chance mate?”

Kade didn’t answer that, perhaps because he had no answer for it. He had made a promise. He had all of these reasons why Serena was a good match, not just for him, but for Ivy. For the pack.

He refused to believe that he fell for Elena, that he was even capable of falling for anyone. This was merely practical, nothing more.

So why did the sight of his mother’s ring on Serena’s finger fill Kade with such dread?

Serena accepted the engagement, of course. She knew it was coming, and had already packed her bags. Within minutes, she was ready to leave her childhood home and return to Crescent Hollow as Kade’s Luna.

By the time they arrived, it was late. Kade showed Serena to her room, which was right across the hall from his.

“We’ll share a room once we’re married, right?” Serena asked, looking up at him hopefully. “As husband and wife?”

Kade wanted to blanch, but replied, “It would only be natural.”

Serena grinned and kissed him on the cheek, then retreated to her room. Standing there alone, Kade felt the dread become almost overwhelming. He started to move without even realizing it, and before he knew what was happening, he was walking up to Elena’s room.

“Alpha.” The guard on duty nodded and stepped aside, giving Kade access to the room. He reached out to knock, although he wasn’t sure why, but froze. The door was already open a crack.

Through the gap, Kade could see her.

Elena.

She was in the middle of changing into her nightgown, and… She was nude. With her back turned to him, she had the shape of a perfect hourglass. Pale skin almost seemed to shimmer in the dim light. Silver hair swayed as she reached for her nightgown and lifted it over her head.

Kade knew he shouldn’t have been looking, but he couldn’t seem to move his feet. He just stood there, frozen, staring at Elena in shock.

For a moment, Kade considered walking into that room and betraying his betrothal to Serena right then and there. His wolf wanted him to.

He knew it was absurd, that it was just the mate bond getting the best of him, but… Dammit, if he didn’t want her. Kade felt like a lovesick teenage boy, desperate and pitiful. The only times he felt like that before was when he would call Samantha to his room. Those nights, he had always convinced himself that he hated her, that he was fucking her only to punish her, but deep down, he had always felt empty when he sent her away.

But then the spell was broken.

Suddenly, Elena inhaled sharply, whipping her head toward the door. Kade stepped out of sight and hurried away

before she could see him.

Serena’s POV

It was finally happening!

Kade had proposed to Serena. Finally, after all these years of careful preparation, Kade was hers. She wore his family’s ring on her finger, and in just a few days, she would be his wife-his Luna.

Serena couldn’t have been happier. She picked out the most beautiful wedding dress from the stylist’s collection, of course, and spared no expense in her preparations. She wanted everything to be white and perfect and unforgettable.

“And your veil, Luna?” the stylist asked, opening the box of veils to choose from.

Serena tapped her chin and leaned forward, trying to find a suitable veil for her dress. She wanted something extravagant and breathtaking, preferably with a tiara attached to it. She was just reaching for the first veil when she heard a shout in the other room.

“Get out of the way, dumbass!”

The male voice was followed by a female gasp and the sound of something shattering. The stylist flinched at the noise, but Serena just sighed. Of course someone’s petty argument would interrupt her wedding preparations.
