Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 78

Chapter 78

Kade’s POV

“Why would I want to leave? My home is here now… With my mate.’

That statement made Kade’s interest pique further. He was about to tell Elena that he had decided to let her go back to Nightshade-Goddess, he had even let Tyler in today in the hopes that she would just try to make a run for it and make his life easier-but for some reason, she refused to leave.

Was she really so enthralled with him that she was content to live in the attic, or was there more to this than she was letting on? Why would Elena really want to stay here? Kade was marrying another.

And yet… Some small part of Kade couldn’t help but feel a little relieved that she was still here. That she was refusing to leave.

On top of it all, Kade felt more curious about Elena than ever. In the spur of the moment, he decided to employ one last test to see if Elena was at all related to Samantha. He wanted to know if she really was a liar, or if this was all just one big misunderstanding.

If he mentioned Serena, her twin, then maybe all would be revealed.

“Come to dinner with me tonight,” Kade blurted out before he could stop himself. “My fiancee, Serena, just moved in. You should meet her.”

Elena froze at Kade’s request. “You… Want me to meet Serena? Over dinner?”

Kade nodded, carefully gauging Elena’s face for any sign of a reaction. “I decided that she’s the best match for marriage, but maybe you can change my mind tonight. Last chance.”

“Oh, I don’t… I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Elena whispered.

Kade quirked a brow. “Why not? You’ve had no issues boldly stating your intentions of being her rival before. Why not jump at the chance to prove yourself now? Or have you lost your nerve already?”

“Well, I just…” Elena sighed, hesitating, then straightened her spine and looked at him again. “Fine. I’ll meet her, if only to prove that I’m the better choice.”

Kade looked at her for a few moments, studying her expression. Elena held his gaze firmly, just as she had so many times before. But he could see the flicker of uncertainty in her eyes. The way her grip tightened around the book in her lap.

What was really going through her mind?

Kade never actually intended to make the two women meet-it was why he had to keep Elena confined to her room today, hidden away from Serena-but now he was quite curious to see what would happen if he did.

“Alright,” he finally said, opening the door again. “I’ll see you at eight, then.”

Elena’s POV

Kade wanted me to go to dinner.

With Serena.

I hadn’t seen Serena in person since my rebirth. Along with the shock that he had chosen her to be his wife after all

-a feeling of shock that I didn’t want to admit, even to myself-came the feeling of dread at the thought of seeing her again.

Would Serena recognize me? Would she rat me out to Kade in an instant?

Serena had never had a problem with throwing me under the bus before. And I was her twin sister. We could probably recognize each other blindfolded. It was a near certainty that she would recognize me now, even though I looked healthier and had different hair.

But Kade was certainly testing me. He wanted to see if I would react to the mention of my sister, if I would refuse to see her. And if I did that, especially after all the bold talk of being her rival, then he might suspect that there was something I wasn’t telling him.

Which there was, of course. But I couldn’t let him know that.

So I accepted the invitation, even if the thought of seeing Serena again terrified me to no end.

I picked out another dress from the closet, this time settling for something bold and completely out of the norm of what I would usually wear. Finally, I found a rich red dress in a luxurious silk. It was a little big on my frame, but with some cleverly placed ribbon and safety pins, it cinched in perfectly and showed off my curves.

I was scrounging through the bathroom cupboards, trying to see if I could find any makeup to help conceal my identity, when a knock came at my door.

A moment later, the Omega, Nellie, entered the room. I stood, surprised and glad to see her. “Did you find anything?” I asked quietly, walking over to her.

She pursed her lips and wrung her hands before answering, “Not yet. I’ve been having some difficulties.”

“What kind of difficulties?”

“It’s not easy to get such documents, you know. I don’t have access to the archives and if my superiors find out I broke in, I could get in a lot of trouble.” Nellie bit the inside of her cheek. “Before I risk my job, can’t you just tell me why you needed the documents? If it’s not for a good reason, then I don’t know if I can help you. Besides, I just found out that you’re not the future Luna…”

I cringed. Right. She probably knew now that Serena was her future Luna, not me, and wouldn’t blindly help me anymore-especially not now that she knew I lied to her.

Thinking quickly, I said, “Look, I’m sorry I wasn’t truthful, but I really thought Kade would choose me. I… I love Kade.” Saying the “L” word when it came to Kade made me want to retch, but I kept it down. “I just wanted to find anything I could use to get closer to him; and now that he’s betrothed to another, I just can’t bear it. Please, if there’s anything you can do to help-

Suddenly, I heard the floorboard creak outside the door. I quickly stopped talking, fearing that Kade would enter the room. But the door never opened, so I assumed it was my guard moving around or the house settling.

Nellie sighed. “I’ll see what I can do. But no promises,” she said, then left.

I wanted to collapse once she was gone. Everything felt like it was falling apart… But at least I could try to sway Kade toward me tonight at dinner. At least I had that. So long as my twin sister didn’t destroy everything, just as
