Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 79

Chapter 79

Elena’s POV

The moment Serena’s face paled when she saw me, I knew it was over.

Or… I thought I knew.

I thought for certain that my own twin sister would recognize me. I thought she would rat me out to Kade and that everything would be lost.

But… She didn’t.

Serena simply glared at me, fingers tightening around her wine glass as she took a slow, drawn-out sip.

“So,” she said as I took my seat across from her, “now I finally get to see you.

I looked at her, not sure how to respond to that. Did she recognize me? Or did she simply see me as a rival?

It seemed it was the latter, because she turned to Kade and said curtly, “You know she’s just trying to use her resemblance to my dead sister to seduce you, right? I overheard her scheming to gain your favor. She can’t be trusted.”

I grit my teeth together. Had that been Serena making the floorboards creak outside my room earlier? How much had she heard? Hopefully only the tail end, when I confessed my so-called “love” to Kade, and nothing more.

Moreover, she hadn’t even recognized me. She only thought I was a copy of her sister.

I supposed, deep down, that a part of me had almost hoped for the comfort of knowing that my own sister would recognize me. I knew it was a silly notion, but… I couldn’t help it.

But it didn’t matter.

Kade simply looked between the two of us. I could see the intrigue written clearly across his face, and it was obvious that this whole thing was set up by him. Whether to gauge my reaction or use Serena as some kind of a bloodhound to sniff out my real identity or simply to amuse himself, I wasn’t sure. But he was the puppet master pulling the strings, and he wasn’t being subtle about it.

“She just wants to be your Luna,” Serena went on, not even looking at me anymore. “You’d be better off sending her back to wherever she came from before she does something drastic.”

I pulled the lid off my dish, resisting the urge to let my mouth water at the sight of a rare cut of steak and buttery mashed potatoes with roasted broccoli. “Kade is my mate,” I said calmly, picking up my knife. “I’m not scheming for anything. I only love him, as is natural.”

Kade coughed into his wine glass at the mention of the word “love” and looked away. Serena looked like she’d just sucked on a lemon.

“You can’t love him. You hardly know him.”

“Are you the one who holds his heart, then?” I asked. I began to cut my meat. “How long have you two known each other?”

“Since childhood,” Serena answered immediately.

Childhood. Ah, yes-those sweet days before she let me take the fall for a crime I didn’t commit. If only it had been as simple as a childhood crush that made her seek Kade out after my death, I could have forgiven her. But Serena knew exactly what she was doing. She had wanted this, wanted him, all along. Letting me take the blame

for her crime was part of her plan to force me to fall from grace.

But what she didn’t know was that I knew her better than anyone. I knew exactly how to make her tick, how to piss her off in the most subtle of ways.
