Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 81

Chapter 81

Elena’s POV

“Alpha Kade, the baby-”

Kade suddenly jerked before the Omega could finish speaking, his elbow knocking over his glass of wine and sending red liquid splashing across the tablecloth. Serena gasped and jumped up from the table before it could stain her dress. The Omega hurried to help Kade clean up the mess.

Meanwhile, I sat there, frozen.

The baby.

Had the healer been talking about… my baby? Ivy?

The hope that had been simmering in the depths of my chest all day suddenly turned into a blazing inferno. The baby. My baby. She was alive, wasn’t she? Kade was keeping her here, keeping her from me-

“Why are you so pale?”

Kade’s gruff voice pulled me out,of my thoughts, and I blinked, bringing the room back into focus. Serena and the Omega were rushing out of the room-it seemed that the wine had stained Serena’s dress after all-and leaving me alone with Kade.

Judging from the suspicious look in his eyes, he had seen the expression on my face. I quickly smoothed it over, but it was too late. He saw the reaction I’d had to the mention of the baby. If I wasn’t careful, he would begin suspecting my identity again.

I needed to leave.

I pushed my chair back and stood slowly, clutching my belly. “I don’t feel well. I’ve been having menstrual cramps since yesterday.” I called to my guard, who was standing just outside the room. “Can you please take me back to my room?”

Kade’s brows knit together. “But dinner isn’t over yet, and you seemed fine before.”

“Cramps come and go at their own will,” I pointed out. Kade’s eyes narrowed somewhat, but he didn’t argue further and simply sat there, watching me as I walked out.

The moment I was out of his line of sight, I tried to breathe, but the air wouldn’t come,

My baby was alive.

She was being kept somewhere in this pack.

And Kade was deliberately keeping her from me.

I was sure of it now, but I needed to think about my next steps. If he had my child locked up somewhere, hidden away from me, then I had to figure out where that was without drawing suspicion. Which meant that I had to continue playing the part of an oblivious, lovestruck fool while knowing that my child was a captive.

As I climbed the stairs to my attic room, my mind whirled with all of the worst possibilities. Was my child sickly, being held in the intensive care unit of the infirmary? Or was Kade keeping her somewhere else, somewhere befitting of the child of a slave-a dank basement, perhaps, or a cramped, dark closet?

She certainly wasn’t in the house, which was confusing. Why was there a nursery and a bassinet if Kade refused to keep our child close?

None of it made sense.

My guard opened my door for me, and I stepped into my room. The door locked behind me a moment later. The solitude was surprisingly comforting, the room lit only by the fire burning low in the fireplace.

I crossed to the window and opened it, leaning out to draw in a deep, desperate lungful of air. The cold stung against the tears that fell on my cheeks. I hadn’t realized I was crying, but I didn’t bother stopping it now.

My child. My little Ivy… Was she alone and afraid? Sickly and dying? A future slave as punishment for crimes her mother never committed?

I desperately hoped that none of those were the case, but right now, I couldn’t be certain. All I knew was that I had to find her and get her out of here.

I leaned out the window for a moment longer, until the frigid air burned my skin. Only then did I retreat and close it again. Rubbing my cold hands together, I turned, seeking warmth from the fireplace.

But just then, my eyes caught something on the bed. Something I hadn’t noticed before.

A thick, yellow envelope was sticking out from under the pillow.

Heart in my throat, I hurried over and pulled it out. I pressed my fingers to my lips in shock when I opened it and realized what the contents were: documents from the infirmary. Documents from my death.

Nellie had come through for me after all.
