Chapter 84
Serena’s POV
Serena overheard everything.
Every movement. Every sound. Every word.
She had watched through the crack in the door as Kade crept up to Elena’s bed. She had seen the look in his eyes as he watched Elena sleep. She had seen the hunger in his gaze. The desire.
She had seen Elena straddle him-had witnessed the whore sitting down on him like she owned him. They’d almost had sex right then and there.
Then, she had seen the mistletoe. The way Kade froze when Elena accused him of loving Samantha and threw it out the window. A lover’s quarrel.
And finally, she had heard Kade tell Elena in a strained voice that she had to leave Crescent Hollow.
Serena ran after that, not wanting to be caught eavesdropping. But she had seen enough.
Kade really did have feelings for the Samantha lookalike-the seductress. And Serena knew that, even if Kade sent her back to Nightshade pack, he wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about her while she was gone.
They were second chance mates, after all, which meant that they would find a way back to each other eventually.
And certainly, that whore would find a way to weasel her way back into his life.
Serena couldn’t play around anymore. She had hoped that Kade would catch Elena in the act of snooping for information about Ivy-had hoped that Kade would find out about Elena’s scheming of his own volition, thus preventing Serena from being caught getting involved.
But that girl was as slippery as an eel, and her resemblance to Samantha made Kade ignore the glaring red flags.
Of course, Serena was no fool. She’d had an inkling for a while that Kade was only considering marrying her because she was a replacement for her dead sister. But at least he had chosen her.
But now… Now, Serena wasn’t sure how long her position here would last. Elena was in the way, and even if she left temporarily, it wouldn’t be forever. Being second chance mates, Kade might choose the other imitation of Samantha instead.
No, Serena had to take more drastic measures to get Elena out of the picture. She had to make sure Kade saw how conniving Elena truly could be, and ruin her reputation with him forever.
Once Serena was safely in her room, she made her decision. She pulled out her phone and texted her cohort again, telling them exactly what to do and when to do it. She hit send, and a few minutes later, her cohort replied: “It will be done, Luna.”
Serena set aside her phone, satisfied. This time, her plan would be more severe, but Serena knew it would be necessary to secure her position.
And if this didn’t work… Then Serena would have to take the most drastic measures of all.
Elena’s POV
Kade was making me leave Crescent Hollow. He was going to escort me all the way back to Nightshade.

I couldn’t leave, though. Not now that I knew my baby was still alive and being held captive somewhere in the pack. I had to find her before I left, had to get her out of here before something horrible happened.
The next morning, I got dressed and went straight to Kade’s office. I knocked, and a moment later, a muffled ” Come in,” came back.
When I entered, I found Kade sitting behind his desk with a pile of paperwork in front of him. His face pinched with frustration when he looked up and saw me approaching, but there was a hint of desire in his eyes, too. That, combined with the sight of him in the sunlight, only served as a bitter reminder of the moment of electricity that had coursed between us last night.
We had wanted each other last night, even if I didn’t want to admit it. I hated that, despite everything, I still craved him. That I would have slept with him if I hadn’t noticed the mistletoe in his hands.
But maybe I could use it to my advantage. I held my chin high and said firmly, “I don’t want to leave, Kade. I want to stay here. With you. I…” I bit down the urge to retch at the thought of saying these words to a man I hated so much. “I love you.”
Kade’s jaw ticked. “I’m sorry, but I’ve made up my mind. I’m marrying Serena tomorrow, and you need to be gone by then. Besides, you’re right: I keep seeing a dead woman’s ghost in you. It’s not good for any of us, so you have to leave.”
“But-”
“I’m not changing my mind, Elena. Return to Tyler. I’ve heard he misses you greatly.”
Before I could answer, Kade waved his hand at my guard, and I was escorted out of the study. I huffed, frustration washing over me, and headed downstairs. My mind was racing; if Kade really forced me to leave before the wedding, then that left less than twenty-four hours for me to find my baby.
What was I going to do?
As I passed by the parlor, I caught a glimpse of Serena trying on her wedding dress. I paused in the doorway, curling my lip hatefully at the sight of her. She looked like a swan, pure white and surrounded by layers of tulle and organza.
Goddess, how I wanted to wrap that dress around her throat and pull until her eyes popped.
As if sensing the hatred simmering beneath my skin, Serena turned, sneering at me over her shoulder.
“Like my dress?” she asked, turning fully and fluffing her skirt. “It’s a shame you won’t be here to see me walk down the aisle tomorrow. It’s going to be a beautiful wedding.”
“I’m sure it will be. Congratulations,” I muttered, turning to leave.
“Oh, no need to hide your true feelings,” Serena called after me. “I know you’ve been trying to imitate my dead sister in order to get what you want. You must be disappointed, knowing that you’ve failed at that, just like everything else in life.”
I froze, hands curling into fists at my sides.
I shouldn’t have let her words get to me. Should have ignored her and focused on what mattered the most: my
