Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 85

Chapter 85

Elena’s POV

“Nellie!” I waved, plastering a smile across my face, and gestured for the Omega to come over. “Do you have a moment?”

Nellie looked around uncertainly. “I have to administer Debbie’s medicine…”

“It’ll only take a second,” I said. “It’s about my cramps. They’re getting worse.”

My guard blanched. “Should I… give you some space?”

“Yes, please,” I replied. “Just for a moment.”

Nellie wrung her hands, but didn’t argue as my guard stepped away to give us some privacy. I led Nellie over to the corner of the porch, ensuring we were out of earshot.

“I read the documents,” I whispered. “Thank you for bringing those to me. I know you stuck your neck out to get them for me.”

She nodded. “It wasn’t easy, but I managed to do it without getting caught.”

“I have one more favor to ask of you. Ivy-where is she being held? I want to see her.”

Nellie’s eyes widened. “Oh, I don’t know…”

“Please,” I said, touching her arm. “I won’t ask for anything else. I just really want to see her.”

She hesitated for a long moment, and I thought she might refuse-and rightfully so. I had already requested a lot from her, and I was just a nobody who had deceived her. But to my relief, she finally nodded.

“I’ll see what I can find out,” she said.

“Thank you. That’s all I ask.”

Nellie nodded curtly and hurried away. The fires of hope were stoked once more in my chest. I hoped it stayed that

way.

I didn’t see or hear from Nellie for the rest of the day. In fact, I began to lose hope again, figuring that she hadn’t found any useful information or perhaps had given up trying to help me altogether. Needless to say, I was surprised when I woke that night to find her dressed in all black and shaking my shoulder.

“Nellie?” I sat up in bed, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. “What are you doing here? It’s one in the morning-”

“Shh.” Nellie pressed her finger to her lips and handed me a dark cloak. “We have to hurry. The guard’s sleeping potion will only last for so long.”

“What’s going on?” I asked, already getting up and slipping the cloak on. “Did you find my-Ivy?”

“Yes.” Nellie looked around furtively. “But we have to go quickly.”

Nodding, I quietly followed her out of the room. Indeed, my guard was passed out on the chair by my door, snoring. Nellie explained that she had dosed him with some harmless sleeping herbs in his water bottle as we hurried out of the house.

The night air bit against my bare skin through my thin nightgown, forcing me to hug the cloak around myself to stay warm. I hadn’t even put on shoes-but it didn’t matter. If I could find my child tonight, then that was all that

mattered. I would take her and leave. I would take the risk and get the hell out of here.

Nellie led me to a medium-sized, nondescript stone building at the edge of the Alpha House property. My breath caught as she led me over to a side door-had my child truly been right here all along? I recalled seeing this building from the windows, never thinking much of it before. I’d assumed it was a barn or a storage building.

I couldn’t believe that Ivy had been hidden inside all this time.

The metal side door opened with a groan, and Nellie and I slipped inside. I was surprised to find a small labyrinth of hallways that led to various rooms, all with keypads above the handles. Nellie quickly led me through the halls, twisting and turning until I lost track of where we were. We took a set of stairs down into a basement, and the maze continued.

Eventually, we came to a nondescript door at the dead end of a corridor. Nellie pulled a scrap of paper out of her pocket and punched a code into the keypad, making me keep watch. For a few moments, there was only the sound of the numbers beeping and my heart pounding in my ears, and then the door beeped one last time and opened.

I stepped inside, my heart in my throat. I expected to hear the soft coos of an infant. My baby. My little girl.

But the room was silent. There was no crib, nothing indicating the presence of a baby.

Just a security desk with a computer screen glowing.

I turned to Nellie, my eyes wide. “I think this is the wrong room,” I whispered.

Nellie’s face pinched. She pulled out the note and checked it again. “Oh, shoot. This is L112, and the right room should be G112. We have to go back upstairs.”

Nodding, I followed Nellie out of the room. The door fell shut behind us, the sound of it echoing through the corridors and making me cringe. Nellie didn’t falter, though, and just continued scurrying through the halls. But as I went to follow her, I was suddenly jerked back, choked by my cloak’s neck strap. I gasped, stumbling back, and found that my cloak had gotten caught in the door.

“Wait! Nellie!” I hissed, tugging on my cloak. “I’m stuck! I need the code!”

She didn’t hear me. A moment later, she was gone.

It was then that I heard the voices up ahead. Two males, talking amongst themselves.

Shit.

Thinking quickly, I ripped hard at my cloak. The fabric tore, leaving behind a chunk, but it was better than leaving behind an entire garment that would certainly indicate someone had been here. Leaving the scrap of fabric caught in the door, I hurried down an adjacent hallway just as the voices came closer.

I slipped into the shadows and peered around the corner. Two Gammas walked past carrying cups of coffee. One of them punched a code into the door that we’d just opened and paused, stooping to pick up the piece of fabric.

“What’s this?” he asked, turning to his colleague, who furrowed his brow. “Strange. Did you get your coat caught in the door?”

My breath caught as the two males hesitated, looking around with confusion. I shrank back into the shadows as far as I could manage and held still, praying they wouldn’t see me.

But, finally, the Gamma sighed and tucked the fabric into his pocket. “Fuck. I just bought that coat, too. Maybe it can be fixed.”

I held my breath until the door closed behind them, and then I hurried in the direction Nellie had gone. I searched high and low for her, keeping to the shadows, but never found her again. She must have run off, terrified, when she thought we’d been caught. I couldn’t blame her.

But I couldn’t stay. I had no access to any of these rooms, and I couldn’t risk being caught on the cameras. Besides, I couldn’t sense my child being close-my wolf didn’t stir. Maybe this was the wrong building after all.

Finally, with my heart sinking, I returned to the Alpha House. My guard was still asleep by the time I crept back into my room, and when I shut the door, I leaned against the wood and shut my eyes.

A single tear rolled down my cheek as the realization of just how urgent my situation was washed over me.

How the hell was I going to find my baby before tomorrow?
