Chapter 89
Elena’s POV
“Wake up!”
The sound of voices and a baby crying jolted me out of my stupor. The pounding in my head was incredible. I felt like I’d taken six shots of vodka before I passed out and eaten a mouthful of dirt from the cellar floor in my sleep. The last thing I recalled was… What happened?
When I cracked my eyes open, I found that I was no longer alone. Serena was standing over me in her wedding dress, lip curled back to reveal a sneer. Behind her, Kade was holding a crying baby in his arms.
My baby.
Ivy…
Before I could react, Serena nudged me directly in the ribs with the sharp tip of her shoe. “What were you thinking?!” she hissed. “Did you think you could get away with stealing the Alpha’s baby during our wedding ceremony?”
I tried to sit up on my elbows, but it was no use. My head was spinning from whatever Nellie had injected into me, and if I moved, I feared I might throw up.
“Steal the baby?” I whispered. My voice came out as a hoarse rasp. “No, I didn’t-”
“Don’t lie to us.” Serena’s eyes flashed with hatred. “What were you doing down here with Ivy? You were supposed to be gone by now!”
I looked over at Kade, at the squirming infant in his arms. His eyes were wide and full of shock. He was staring at me with mistrust, still wearing his tuxedo. There was no golden wedding band on his finger. Had the ceremony ended too soon?
“I… I only wanted to see her,” I said, finally finding my voice. “I wasn’t going to hurt her or steal her.”
“Oh, yeah? Then what were you doing in the cellar?” Serena gestured around us.
I furrowed my brow, wracking my hazy brain in an attempt to recall what had happened. Finally, it hit me- Nellie. The needle. She had betrayed me. She had lured me here on purpose.
But of course, I couldn’t tell them everything. The words danced on the tip of my tongue, but I slammed my mouth shut and forced myself to think clearly, even if I wanted to blurt out the truth in my half-delirious state.
No. If I divulged everything, then Kade and Serena would definitely know my real identity. It would ruin everything.
Think, Elena. Think!
Before I could come up with an excuse, though, Serena scoffed and waved her hand at a Gamma standing by the door. “Bring her in!”
I pushed myself up to my hands and knees as the door opened, glancing briefly at Kade once more. He was still staring at me in complete shock, still clutching Ivy to his chest. I wasn’t sure if I had ever seen him so speechless before.
Suddenly, Nellie strode into the room. Her eyes were wide and her face was pale, and she was being led by another Gamma by the wrist. The Gamma released her somewhat forcefully, causing her to stumble forward.
