Kade’s POV
The wedding was beautiful, of course. Kade had to hand it to Serena- she had good taste, and had clearly spared
no expense.
As the guests filed into the chapel, gasping in awe at the beautiful violin music and the white flowers adorning every pew, Kade waited by the wedding arch with a polite but distant look on his face.
Inside, his chest felt like it was blackening into a lump of coal.
This whole thing made Kade uneasy. He didn’t want to marry Serena-he knew it in his bones, just as he felt his left knee twinge when it was about to rain.
But it was too late to back out now. The ceremony began before he even came out of his stupor. The music swelled, and the guests stood, and the doors opened. Serena, looking like a big white cupcake, stepped into the room and beamed at him. The guests gasped. The flower girl skipped up the aisle, throwing pink petals before Serena’s feet. Doves fluttered in the rafters overhead.
It really was a beautiful wedding.
If only Kade paid attention to any of it. But his heart and mind weren’t here, and his wolf was howling in protest. He didn’t want this. Didn’t want her.
Still, he plastered a happy look onto his face, because that was what was expected of him, as Serena said her vows. The priest turned to him, and the room fell silent.
Everyone held their breath. So did Kade.
Slowly, he opened his mouth to say the vows he had rehearsed—the final words. All he had to do was say them, and all would be sealed with a kiss. Serena would become his wife, he would finally have a Luna, and the pack would stabilize.
And Elena…
Elena would be in Nightshade. With Tyler.
Why did the thought of that make a pang shoot through Kade’s chest?
He barely knew Elena. And even if she was somehow Samantha reincarnated, and he had been right all along, that only meant that he should hate her even more. Samantha had ruined his life, ruined Debbie’s life. He only cared if she was still alive so he could continue to punish her for what she had done.
And yet…
He couldn’t get Elena out of his mind. Couldn’t stop seeing her when he looked down at Serena’s hopeful face.
The priest cleared his throat. “Ahem… Alpha Kade? Your vows, please?”
Kade nodded. “Right. Sorry. I, Kade, promise to have you… To hold you…”
Suddenly, as the words worked their way out of Kade’s mouth like a marionette on strings, Kade froze again. But this time, it wasn’t a pang of dread or regret that he felt. This time, it was something far worse.
Anguish.
