Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 91

Chapter 90

Shock and outrage simmered within me in equal measure. Nellie had lied. Not only had she lied, but she had completely thrown me under the bus.

As if the needle in my neck wasn’t enough, I felt even more betrayed now. And as I looked between Serena’s smug face and Nellie’s reluctance to meet my eyes, I had a sneaking suspicion that they had collaborated on this.

I wanted to accuse both of them outright, but I couldn’t, so I simply turned to Kade.

“That’s not what happened,” I said.

“No?” Serena sneered. “Bullshit. I think you wanted to kill the baby. Get Kade’s heir out of your way so you could get knocked up and one day claim Crescent Hollow.”

“That’s not true!” I blurted out. “I would never hurt her!”

“Then what were your true intentions?” Kade spoke for the first time this entire interaction, and his voice was low and dangerous. The sound of it sent a spike of fear through me.

I opened my mouth, but the words wouldn’t come. What was I supposed to say? They had found me in the fucking cellar of all places with a baby that wasn’t supposed to be mine. If I were Kade, I would be suspicious, too.

But I had to say something.

Finally, I had an idea.

My lip began to quiver. My eyes filled with tears. I sniffled and looked up at Kade, at the squirming baby in his arms, and whispered, “It’s only because I love you so much.”

Kade’s eyes narrowed. “What?”

“I love you,” I croaked out. “And it’s because of how much I love you that I wanted to see Ivy. I only wanted to hold her, and the moment I did, I…” I looked down at my shaking hands. My nails dug into the dirt floor of the cellar. “I just got so… scared.”

Kade was silent. “Don’t listen to her,” Serena scoffed. “She’s an actress, nothing more.”

“It’s true!” I insisted, my voice wavering now. “The moment I held Ivy, I knew I loved her like my own child. I couldn’t bear the thought of the three of us being away from each other, so I… I panicked. And I hid. I ran to the cellar.”

Behind me, I could hear Nellie shifting nervously on her feet. Stay quiet, I wanted to say. I prayed she wouldn’t say anything. Prayed that she would at least have the decency to let me lie about this.

“Please,” I whispered. I sat up on my knees and clasped my dirt-covered hands together, looking up at Kade imploringly. “Please don’t send me away. I can’t stand it if I’m forced to be away from you and Ivy. I love you both.”

Serena scoffed again and shook her head. But Kade remained silent, just staring at me.

If only to drive the point home, I sent a thrum through the bond we shared. Just one. Just a sliver of the anguish I truly felt at the idea of being separated from Ivy-although I was lying about everything else, the part about being terrified of being away from her was true. He could know that much.

Kade flinched at the sudden contact through the bond. A long moment påssed, and I could feel his uncertainty at the contact, but I refused to let go. I grasped the bond like my life depended on it; perhaps it did. I held his stare,
