Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 98

Chapter 98

Behind me, Serena scoffed again. “So she’s an ‘apprentice’ now? Oh, please. Kade, you can’t seriously be buying this, right? She’s clearly lying. Every time she talks to you, it’s like she comes up with another laurel to add to her crown of lies.”

I ignored Serena and held Kade’s gaze, silently imploring him to believe me. To trust me. To listen to me and give me this chance.

He studied me for a moment, gray eyes searching my face. I felt another pang through the bond that almost stole my breath away, but I composed myself, reminding myself that Kade was still the man who had enslaved and tormented me for years. I was only doing this for Ivy. Not him.

“Well, apprentice or not, I doubt there’s much you can do that my expert healers cannot,” he said after considering my words for a moment. “But thank you for the offer.”

My jaw clenched. I wished I could just tell Kade the truth about my Silver Wolf to prove myself, but I couldn’t. Not without him potentially looking into my identity and discovering my secret. There were far too few Silver Wolves in the world, and the fascination would make him look into my lineage. It could ruin everything I had worked so hard for.

With that, Kade finally turned to leave, quietly indicating that the conversation was over. Serena stepped into my peripheral vision, and even without directly looking at her, I could sense her malicious glee at my failure, could see her sneer out of the corner of my eye.

But I wasn’t going to back down so easily.

“At least let me give her a checkup!” I called after Kade. “Five minutes is all I ask! I may be able to help, and even if I can’t, what’s the harm in trying? As a father, don’t you want to at least be able to say you tried everything?”

Kade stopped walking, although he kept his back turned to me. I didn’t expect him to agree to my request-I knew he still didn’t trust me very much.

But to my surprise, and Serena’s obvious frustration, Kade turned to me and said after a moment, “You know what? You’re right. It wouldn’t hurt. I’ll call on you tonight, and you can take a look at her.”

I couldn’t help the grin that spread across my face. Serena, meanwhile, looked like she’d just sucked on a lemon.

“This is a bad idea, Kade,” she huffed. “After what she did yesterday, you’re still going to let her near Ivy? Who knows what she’ll do to her the moment she gets ahold of her!”

For the first time throughout this entire interaction, Kade’s gaze snapped to Serena. His gray irises hardened into two orbs of steel, instantly silencing her with just one look.

“I will take any risk to help my daughter get better,” he said quietly. “Any at all.”

The conviction in his words made Serena snap her mouth shut.
