Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 97

Chapter 97

Elena’s POV

My heart lurched painfully at the healer’s words.

“Illness?” I whispered.

Ivy was ill? My daughter was sick? With what?

Kade didn’t seem to hear me speak, and if he did, he ignored me outright. Lips pressed into a thin line, he quickly followed the healer into the hallway, leaving me momentarily alone with Serena and Debbie. Serena wrinkled her nose at me and gave me a disdainful look before turning with a hmph and storming out, chin raised.

I rushed after her, but not because of her. I didn’t give a flying fuck about Serena right now; if my daughter was ill, then I wanted to know every detail. I would do anything to check on Ivy. Anything.

“…Her lungs simply can’t support enough oxygen intake,” the healer was saying quietly. “We’ve tried everything, but her asthma is worsening and it’s only making her immune system weaker than it already was. I fear brain damage…”

Asthma. Poor immune system. Brain damage. Each word seemed to get worse and worse.

My baby could have brain damage.

I was frozen, my feet rooted to the floor like my shoes had suddenly become nailed to the hardwood.

The thought of anything happening to my baby was like a knife twisting in my chest. If Ivy was sick, if it affected her or even killed her… I couldn’t bear it. I would die again. I wouldn’t let the Moon Goddess send me back, either. Not if my little girl was gone.

Kade whispered back and forth with the healer for another moment. Finally, the healer nodded and hurried away. Glancing up, Kade spotted me and Serena still standing there.

“Thank you for your help earlier,” Kade said, gesturing to Debbie’s door. “It’s much appreciated.” He then turned to leave, but I rushed forward, suddenly finding it in me to move again.

“Wait! What’s wrong with Ivy?”

Kade paused, glancing at me uncertainly. His mouth opened and closed a few times as if struggling with a response-or whether to even give me one-but then he finally said, “She was born prematurely and without a mother. Unfortunately, her body is underdeveloped and without her mother’s breastmilk to help her grow and strengthen her immune system, she’s… struggling.”

The anguish that flashed across Kade’s face as he said those words was palpable, I could feel it rippling through the mate bond like a living thing-a wave of pain and fear and fatherly protectiveness.

For the second time that morning, I caught a glimpse of a man I hadn’t seen before. Not the cold, brutal Alpha I had come to know, but… Someone else. Someone tender and afraid.

Someone almost like the nice boy I once knew, only older and more haunted and so much more afraid.

Without conscious thought, I found myself reaching out through the bond we shared. It was just a single thrum of comfort, like resting a hand on his shoulder only to pull it away in a moment, but it was enough to make Kade’s spine snap ramrod straight. He blinked at me, and I could feel the uncertainty rippling back toward me.

I offered him a small smile. “Can I look at her?” I asked. “Maybe I can use my ability on her. Help her recover.”

Kade hesitated, clearly unsure of what to say. I kept my face as calm and open as I could, hoping that he would trust me.
