Chapter 96 Present
Emily Carter jolted like she’d been shocked and frantically shook her head. “Nope, nope, I
don’t wanna know anything!” She snatched up the figurine she’d been eyeing for ages. “Okay,
I’m just gonna leave you guys be. Oh, and remember to pay! Thanks!”
Then she dashed off like her life depended on it.
Thinking back to that line from earlier, Amelia Johnson suddenly felt a little awkward facing
Damien Taylor. She quickly walked over to the register.
“Am I not good–looking enough? Won’t even look at me?”
That’s what Damien had mouthed to her just a second ago–eyes gleaming with that teasing
smile.
Seriously though, there were plenty of people around just now!
Amelia’s tiny tiptoe bounce totally gave her cheerful mood away.
“Hi, your total is…” The cashier smiled politely while sneaking glances at the tall guy hovering
behind Amelia.
Damien casually pulled out his card first. “Use this.”
But Amelia grabbed the card and shook her head, firm. “Hey, that was a gift for Emily. I
should be the one paying.”
Damien frowned. “Why’re you giving him a present?”
Amelia just grinned and handed over her own card. “That’s a secret.”
He frowned deeper but didn’t press it.
After paying, they walked out together, shoulder to shoulder. Amelia tried to make small talk,
“So, what brings you here?”
“Just scoping out the area.” Damien watched her as she got distracted by a crystal lamp,
then immediately told the staff, “Wrap that up.”
Amelia blinked, hesitant. “Why are you giving me stuff for no reason?”
“Secret,” Damien shot back with that same look.
Throwing her own words back at her made Amelia want to laugh and cry at the same time.
This big guy could be such a kid.
“Well, thanks then!”
She reached out, but Damien dodged and said seriously, “I’ll carry it.”
Then gestured for her to look around.
All the couples in the mall had the guys holding the shopping bags.
Amelia couldn’t help but smile and tease, “Look at you, quite the gentleman.”
After that, every time Amelia’s gaze lingered on something for more than a minute, Damien
would follow up with, “Wrap that too.”
The whole shopping spree had Amelia feeling totally pampered.
When they’d bought way too much, Amelia said she seriously needed to recharge, so Damien
took her out for dinner and arranged for all the bags to be sent to the Johnson house.
He picked a super romantic French place–totally the kind made for couples.
Just after they sat down, Amelia was about to ask him to pick the dishes, but he pushed the
menu to her and said, straight–faced, “You lead, I follow.”
Her face instantly flushed. She ducked her head and started flipping through the menu,
flustered.
In the end, she ordered a bunch of stuff she wasn’t even sure about.
Outside the restaurant.
Jack Mitchell happened to walk past and spotted Amelia laughing sweetly through the glass.
He stopped at the entrance for a second, then walked right in without hesitation.
Sophia Lee trailed behind, puzzled. “I thought you didn’t like French food?”
“Now and then is fine,” Jack replied casually. But he knew exactly why he came in.
Inside, Amelia looked up and spotted Jack. Her smile widened. “Jack! What a coincidence.”
Jack nodded with that gentle look in his eyes. “Yeah, just happened to be craving French food
too.”
Sophia, in her heels, lagged behind a bit. By the time she caught up, Jack was already settling
