Chapter 97 How can it just vanish?!
After a whole lot of pestering from Sabrina Johnson, Amelia Johnson finally gave in and
opened the gift box. She forced herself to act thrilled. “Wow, this is really pretty!” she
exclaimed, putting on a show.
Watching Amelia pretend to be overjoyed, Sabrina stood there with a smirk, her eyes full of
disdain.
Typical country bumpkin. Just an old dress I wore before and she’s acting like she won the
lottery.
Tomorrow, you’ll be parading around in that old thing on your birthday. Let’s see how ‘grand‘
your moment really is.
Once Sabrina left, Amelia wrinkled her nose in disgust, crumpled the dress into a ball, stuffed
it back into the box, and kicked it under the bed. Out of sight, out of mind.
After tidying herself up, she headed downstairs.
The main hall had been decked out lavishly–seriously over–the–top.
And all because Damien Taylor was showing up for her birthday party. Richard Johnson had
gone all out. Grace Williams and her daughter, Sabrina, were practically green with envy.
Grace pulled Amelia aside with a syrupy sweet smile. “Summer, did you already give that gift
to Principal Veritas?”
Amelia was ready for this. She showed Grace a photo Emily Carter had sent her. “It’s already
on the principal’s desk. Now we just wait to hear back.”
Grace, clearly not convinced, had Sabrina double–check if that was really Veritas’s office.
Sabrina nodded. She’d never seen the principal himself, but she’d walked past the office
enough times to recognize the decor through the window.
Then Grace leaned in again, reminding Amelia, “When Damien shows up tomorrow, try to
bring up the topic of investment. Your dad’s spent a fortune on this party, after all.”
That one stung a little. Amelia sighed, looking a bit hurt. “I did try talking to him about it, but
he seemed kinda upset. Auntie, I really don’t wanna make him mad again.”

If Damien were here, he’d be speechless. As if he’d ever yell at his little sweetheart.
Amelia just didn’t want to help. The decorations were set, invites sent–what could Richard
do, cancel everything last minute?
There was no pulling back now.
Grace’s smile faded. The whole point of this party was to impress Damien and get that
investment. But if Damien wasn’t interested, all this would be for nothing.
“Then-”
“Mom, come here.” Sabrina pulled Grace aside, whispering, “Yeah, Amelia’s attractive, I’ll give
her that. But Damien’s seen plenty of beautiful women. Amelia? Just a fling. He’ll get bored
soon enough, trust me.”
Grace’s face darkened, and she shot Amelia a harsh glare before rushing off to find Richard.
Sabrina glanced over at Amelia, pretending to be all sweet while her stomach churned with
annoyance. Then a sneaky little idea sparked in her head. She wrapped her arm around
Amelia’s. Smiling, she said, “Sis, let’s have a heart–to–heart, just us girls, okay?”
Totally fishy.
That was Amelia’s immediate thought.
Still, she was curious to see what Sabrina was scheming now.
So they went upstairs together.
Once the door was shut, Sabrina had Amelia sit down and even handed her a pillow to hug.
Amelia didn’t want to touch anything that belonged to Sabrina, but Sabrina insisted, even
guiding how she should hold it.
Sabrina explained, “This is what they do on TV. If things get too shy to say, just hide your face
behind it.”
Sabrina was about to explode. She seriously wanted to c***k open Amelia’s head and see
