Chapter 49 Reflect

“No, I definitely didn’t say anything.” Sabrina suddenly seemed to remember something. “Dad, yesterday afternoon, when you told me and Mom that Amelia was spending the night at Damien’s place, Ethan showed up not long after. Do you think maybe he overheard us at the door?”

Richard nodded. “That’s very possible. Sabrina, you should find a chance to talk to Ethan and clear this up. After all, Amelia was really at her cousin’s place last night we can’t let Ethan keep misunderstanding.”

Sabrina nodded obediently. “Don’t worry, Dad. Even if you didn’t say anything, I’d explain it to Ethan. I mean, this is about Amelia’s reputation.”

Grace walked in just then; she’d clearly heard part of the conversation. “Amelia, you’re not a kid anymore. How can you be so reckless? If we mess up our relationship with the Collins family, it’ll impact your dad’s business big time.”

Sabrina chimed in with a pout, “Yeah, sis, when I’m with Ethan, I always go along with whatever he wants. I wouldn’t dare upset him. No wonder he doesn’t like you-you really need to take a good look at yourself.”

Amelia replied calmly, “Real love doesn’t need anyone to bend over backwards.”

“Amelia, your dad’s hoping this marriage pulls through-it’s all for the Johnson family’s future. You can’t just think about yourself,” Grace added pointedly-basically saying her dad didn’t care about her, just the family’s interests.

“She’s right. You’re being too selfish,” Richard grunted, clearly annoyed.

“So, in Dad’s eyes, I’m just a pawn to be traded off?” Amelia gave a cold little smile. Deep down, though, she already knew the answer. That’s all she’d ever been to him.

Grace frowned, “Amelia, come on. Your dad raised you all these years-doing something for the family isn’t too much to ask. And let’s not forget, you did used to want to marry Ethan, didn’t you?”

“Aunt Grace, I grew up in the countryside. My foster parents worked hard to raise me,” Amelia said, her voice cool.

“What kind of comment is that? Your dad offered to pay them back for all those years of raising you-they turned it down themselves,” Grace said, linking her arm with Richard’s. “When you went missing back then, we were both devastated. Your dad was so upset he couldn’t even eat for days. No one wanted that to happen-it was just an accident.”
