“What alumni gathering?” Amelia Johnson asked.

“Oh, it’s just a get-together my college classmates planned. The student council president from our year organized it-it’s a big deal.” Sabrina Johnson-clutched Amelia’s hand. “Sis, you really have to go. I mean, you didn’t really go to school, right? You wouldn’t get chances like this often.”

Amelia gave her a soft, apologetic smile. “Sabrina, I’d love to go, really, but I already told my cousin I’d attend another event with him.”

“That cousin of yours, from that no-name college? Can that even compare to Sabrina’s university?” Grace Williams chimed in, her tone dripping with mockery.

Amelia lowered her eyes slightly. “I’m not even sure which college he graduated from…”

Seeing Amelia shrink back like that, looking all unsure, made Sabrina secretly thrilled. “So, sis, which school did you graduate from?”

“I…”, Amelia bit her lip. “Sabrina, I think I’ll skip your reunion. I’m heading upstairs to rest.”

Amelia’s quiet retreat had both Sabrina and Grace smiling to themselves.

Grace scoffed. “What’s the point of being pretty if you’ve got nothing upstairs? People’ll be laughing behind

her back.”

Back when Amelia returned to the Johnson family at eighteen, Richard Johnson wanted her to go back to school, but Amelia insisted she’d already graduated. At that age, she probably only finished middle school -maybe a tech school at best. Her foster parents were dirt poor, no way they could afford more than that.

Sabrina pouted. “But if she doesn’t come, who’s there to laugh at?”

Grace patted her reassuringly. “Relax, I’ll talk to her again later.”

Sabrina’s smile faded into something colder. “She’s going, one way or another. I want Ethan to see exactly how much of a mess she really is.”

Once in her room, Amelia called Emily Carter. “Sabrina’s showing up at your alumni thing too, and she wants to drag me along.”

“We went to the same college?” Emily sounded genuinely surprised.

Amelia teased, “What? Feel honored sharing a school with the queen herself?”
