Suzanna felt her whole mood sour. She grabbed Annie and pulled her behind her, instantly cutting off those two disgusting stares. "What a way to ruin the night."
She rolled her eyes without the slightest attempt at politeness.
Helena's expression soured. She had already found Annie impolite, but her friend was just as uncouth—loud, brash, and flitting about with a man constantly at her side, clearly from a family of little standing.
And that handsome guy next to Annie? He looked fine, but there was something cheap and off about him. After all, who would show up at an event like this looking like that?
Helena sneered inwardly but forced on a fake, condescending smile, striding forward like a self-appointed elder. She ignored Annie completely and instead turned to Suzanna, eyeing her up and down.
"You must be Annie's friend," she said, forcing her mouth into what she thought was a warm smile. "You're not getting any younger. It's time to think about your future.
"I happen to know a good candidate. Although he's divorced and a little bit older, he's wealthy and owns two publicly traded companies. What he needs is a well-behaved woman to take care of him."
She sounded like she was doing Suzanna a favor, as if Suzanna were some poor, helpless woman.
"If you're willing, I can introduce you two."
Suzanna almost laughed out loud.
Where did this old viper get the confidence? Did Helena think that this was some kind of flea market, trying to play matchmaker?
Suzanna let out a sharp, cold laugh. "You should keep him for yourself. It seems like you've got plenty of experience taking care of men."
Helena's face flushed a deep crimson. "You little brat, how can you talk like that?"
She fumed, her chest rising and falling with anger. Just as she was about to blow up, her eyes caught sight of her perfect son, and her confidence instantly returned.
She yanked Sean forward and proudly lifted her chin. "I'm not going to waste my breath on ignorant people like you."
Then, in a voice loud enough for everyone nearby to hear, she announced, "Sean is about to get engaged to the Snyder family's eldest daughter! He'll be their son-in-law. Now that's what I call a perfect match."
She finished with a pointed glance at Annie, watching for a flicker of jealousy.
