Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 147

All afternoon, Annie couldn't focus. She kept glancing down at the new badge hanging on her chest. In the photo, her eyes looked bright, her smile confident.

A few hours ago, she had been thrilled by the recognition and was convinced that her life was finally getting back on track.

But now, it felt like she had stumbled headfirst into another trap.

Why had Christian lied to her?

He had told her that he was a marketing manager, earning over 100 thousand dollars a year, with the company even providing an apartment and a car.

Was all of it fake?

Annie replayed every moment she had spent with Christian, from the way he spoke to her to the way he looked after her. She could tell that they were real.

But lying was something she would never forgive.

After work, Annie returned to their apartment. When she opened the door, Christian still wasn't home.

She didn't turn on the lights. Beneath the dim light of the entryway, she slipped into her slippers, walked to the couch, and sank into it, motionless.

About half an hour later, she heard a key turn in the lock.

Annie's body tensed instantly.

The door opened, and Christian's tall figure appeared in the doorway. He didn't seem to expect her to be sitting in the dark. He paused, then reached over and turned on the living room lights.

He asked, "Why didn't you turn on a light?"

Light spilled across the room. He set his briefcase down and loosened his tie as he walked toward her.

Annie looked at him, forcing her expression to stay neutral. "I just got back."

Christian sat beside her naturally, his deep gaze settling on her face. He could tell that something about her was off that day.

"Was work exhausting?"

"It was fine." Annie avoided his eyes and stood up. "I'll get you some water."

She headed for the kitchen and could feel his gaze following her the whole way. After she poured the water, she handed it to him.
