"Get ahold of him, my ass!" Suzanna swore on the other end of the line. "William has been dodging me all day! He hasn't replied to a single message or answered one call! If I hadn't had someone track him down, I'd still be completely in the dark!

"That bastard is partying at Nightfall Club right now!"

Nightfall Club was one of the most notorious money pits in Jynston, the kind of place spoiled heirs treated as their own private playground.

"Ann, you have to come with me," Suzanna said, leaving no room for argument. "I'm going there tonight to drag him out and make him explain himself! I need backup, and you're my strongest support!"

Listening to Suzanna rage on, Annie found herself oddly amused. And honestly, it was fine.

Instead of sitting around spiraling and letting Christian's lies tie her thoughts into knots, she could go out and back Suzanna up. At least William was a clear, obvious target.

"Alright," Annie said without hesitation. "What time?"

"8:30 pm. Nightfall Club entrance. Don't be late!"

"Okay."

Annie hung up and quickly changed into casual clothes. When she stepped out of her room, the living room was already filled with the smell of food.

Christian had somehow changed out of his suit jacket. He was wearing a dark gray apron and working in the open kitchen. The pan let out a soft sizzle, making everything smell even better.

Hearing her footsteps, Christian leaned out from the kitchen. "Give me ten minutes. Dinner will be ready soon."

Annie stopped in her tracks.

Christian looked warm and attentive, like the kind of husband no one could complain about. She tightened her grip on her bag strap, and the expression on her face cooled bit by bit.

She said, "I've got something to do tonight. I'm not eating at home."

The smile on Christian's face faltered.

He turned off the heat and came out of the kitchen, untying the apron as he walked. "It's late. Where are you going?"
