After settling Suzanna onto the couch, Annie hesitated for a moment before recounting everything that had happened at the restaurant earlier that evening, leaving nothing out.
"He said that he feels like he doesn't matter to me," she said.
Suzanna couldn't hold back her laughter.
Annie looked at her best friend, who was cracking up and rocking back and forth, with a blank expression.
Suzanna asked, "You really can't see it? He's obviously jealous. He's jealous of Sean Frost!"
Annie was completely stunned. She didn't understand why Christian was jealous.
Suzanna continued, "Think about it. After you woke up, other than caring about Irene, who was the other person you asked about? It was that bastard Sean!
"How could Uncle Chris not feel bad about that? He busted his hump watching over you all night, not sleeping a wink, yet your mind was focused on the enemy who almost killed you.
"He definitely thinks that, in your heart, he is less important than an ex who hurt you.
"He has done a lot for you. He settled the score for you, he nursed you around the clock, and he doesn't even have a label to show for it. Instead, you treat him like he doesn't matter. Who wouldn't feel hurt in his shoes?"
Suzanna's words were like a bucket of cold water, instantly waking Annie up. She finally understood the reason.
She had focused only on the kind of punishment Sean had received, but she had never considered how Christian had felt when she asked the questions.
Christian had done so much for her, yet she hadn't given him a single word of affirmation. It was no wonder he had been so silent these past few days and had asked such a question.
Christian wasn't angry that the wedding had been ruined, nor did he care about the money. What mattered to him was her—and who he was in her eyes.
A sharp sting of regret gripped Annie's heart as if a hand were squeezing it tight. She looked at Suzanna and asked with some uncertainty, "So... what are you saying?"
"I'm saying that he likes you! Anyone can see that!" Suzanna poked Annie in the forehead, frustrated that the latter was being so dense.
She continued to ask, "What about you? Ann, tell me. What exactly do you feel for Uncle Chris?"
Annie's heart skipped a beat. She gave it some thought.
"I..."
She didn't know.
Suzanna sighed when she saw Annie's conflicted expression. She said, "Ann, I know your last relationship hurt you deeply, but you can't write off all men just because of one jerk.
