It seemed that Annie couldn't even be bothered to send a text or offer an explanation.
A bitter mix of frustration and heartache welled in Christian's chest, threatening to break his composure. However, just as his anger began to rise, he forcibly tamped it down.
He reminded himself that he wasn't in any position to be angry.
From the very beginning, he had practically cajoled and strong-armed Annie into this marriage.
Annie had just survived a near-death experience, and she was still shaken. How could he be so petty as to hold this against her?
He realized that he had been too impatient.
Christian slowly exhaled a heavy breath, trying to smooth out his turbulent emotions. He knew that he couldn't go on like this. He couldn't push her further away.
Christian grabbed his suit jacket from the back of the chair and strode out of the office. He was going to pick Annie up and bring her home.
He reached the elevator and was just about to press the call button when he saw Annie standing at the entrance of the lobby, looking around with a trace of nervousness.
He wondered if she was here for him.
Christian's feet were instantly rooted to the spot.
Annie spotted him at once. She hurried over, stopping before him and looking up. Her eyes were rimmed with red. It was as if she had been crying, or perhaps her eyes had just been stung by the night wind.
Annie spoke first. "I'm sorry. I..."
She paused, seemingly searching for the right words. She continued, "I can't deny that I might be a little slow when it comes to feelings. Or maybe I just have trouble telling things apart.
"I'm sorry. Please forgive me."
Christian just looked at her quietly, the coldness in his gaze giving way to warmth.
Annie felt a little awkward under his gaze, but she mustered up her courage and continued, "But being married to you these past few days... It actually hasn't been bad. So, maybe... we could try to make this work like a real, normal couple."
After she finished speaking, Annie nervously gripped the hem of her shirt, waiting for his reply.
The air hung heavy between them.
The road home was bright and clear.
The next day was the weekend. The sun was shining, and the breeze was gentle.
Christian drove Annie back to the Steward residence early in the morning.
To cover for her, Suzanna had told a little white lie, claiming that Annie had left the wedding halfway through because of an urgent business trip.
Now that she was back, Annie had to go check in on Irene to let her know that she was safe.
The car came to a smooth stop in the familiar courtyard.
Gary had been waiting at the door for quite some time. When he saw Annie get out of the car, his face immediately lit up with a smile. He said, "Ms. Steward, you're back."
His gaze then landed on Christian, who stepped out of the car right after her.
Annie looked around and asked, "Where is Grandma?"
