Half an hour later, Annie and Christian arrived at the hospital. She hauled him out of the car and supported him as she rushed them toward the ER.
She yelled, "Doctor! Please! Someone help!"
Her voice immediately drew the attention of the on-duty nurses and doctors.
Christian leaned entirely on her. The heat radiating through his clothes was unnaturally fierce, sending her heart pounding with dread.
A doctor quickly stepped forward to take over Christian and transferred him onto a stretcher. After a quick examination, he removed his stethoscope and frowned slightly.
"High fever and rapid heart rate suggest a reaction to some sort of medication. Did he consume anything questionable?"
Annie's expression darkened as her suspicions were confirmed. "He didn't eat anything bad; he was simply drugged."
The doctor paused, then nodded in understanding. After all, such incidents were common in the ER.
"We'll start IV fluids to bring his temperature down, then run a blood test to identify the substance."
A nurse soon wheeled over an IV stand and skillfully inserted the needle into the back of Christian's hand. After a long stretch of chaos and procedures, he was finally settled into a private ward.
Annie sat by the bed and looked at him while he slept. The anger and lingering fear in her chest had yet to subside.
Fortunately, she had felt unsettled that night and made that call to Christian. She was relieved that she had gone to the club to find him.
If she hadn't, she wouldn't dare imagine the consequences of what would have happened that night. She wondered who would have the guts to use such underhanded tactics against Christian.
Annie's gaze slowly hardened. Her fingers couldn't help but curl and clench into tight fists.
The ward was silent, broken only by the faint drip of the IV.
Annie looked at Christian lying in bed. Under the light, his features looked almost unreal—high nose bridge, thin lips, and long lashes casting soft shadows beneath his eyes.
He usually wore a gentle smile, but that night he lay there vulnerable and defenseless—brought down by someone else's scheme.
A fine, dense ache spread in Annie's heart as if it had been pricked lightly.
She had seen Christian's face countless times, but never so closely like now, with such a reassuring sense of peace.
Maybe it was exhaustion from the long night, but as she rested her head against the side of the bed, her eyelids grew heavy. At some point, she drifted off into a deep sleep.
