Annie ran in the direction Mason had pointed, pushing herself as hard as she could. She didn't know how long she'd been running before the noise behind her faded completely.
There was no sign of anyone nearby.
Her legs felt like they were packed with lead. Every step took everything she had left.
Just as she was about to give out, a faint red-and-blue flicker flashed in the darkness ahead—the glow of emergency lights.
She straightened on unsteady feet and forced herself to move faster toward that small patch of light.
"Help... Help..."
The alternating lights grew clearer.
Patrol officers sweeping the area spotted a staggering figure emerging from the dark.
They raised their flashlights, sweeping the beams over her, then rushed forward when they saw it was a woman, clothes in disarray, panic written across her face.
"Miss, what happened? Miss?"
The moment Annie saw the uniforms, the last thread holding her together snapped.
She grabbed the lead officer's arm with the last of her strength. "I'm from Caldra. My husband's last name is Parker… I was taken here… Please… save me…"
Before she could finish speaking, her vision went black, and she collapsed.
The lead officer caught her. The instant he heard the name "Parker", his pupils constricted.
He relayed it up the chain over his radio as fast as he could, then ordered his team to get Annie to the military hospital immediately.
...
Annie had no idea how much time had passed. Her consciousness drifted in and out of a heavy haze.
