"It's in the headlines in the finance news. Sean has been fired! Word is his long-missing older brother, Easton, came back, and the moment he returned, he seized power!"
"That's not all. I heard Easton's legs are crippled. He's trapped in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, but he is truly ruthless."
So, that was what happened between Sean and Nathan. Annie's fingers paused slightly on the mouse, then resumed moving. These people and their businesses no longer had anything to do with her.
Only, Easton's matter was far too coincidental. It had Christian's name written all over it.
Was Christian standing up for her? Annie couldn't be bothered to dig into it. She only felt a wave of frustration in her chest.
Just then, crisp high-heel clicks sounded at the office door, and in came Linda. The moment she entered, she swept the room with her sharp gaze and finally locked onto Annie. Her stride hesitated for a split second.
Was Annie out of her mind? Christian had rescued her just late last night, and she was already back at the office, working. She just didn't care about her well-being at all.
Stepping on her high heels, Linda walked straight to Annie's desk, and the surrounding chatter instantly vanished.
"Annie," she said.
Annie looked up, her face expressionless. "Hi, Linda."
Linda's gaze lingered on Annie's pale face for a few seconds, her brows unconsciously knitting. "I've approved paid leave for you. Go home and get some rest."
Annie refused without a second thought. "I'm fine, Linda. Work is more—"
"That's an order." Linda cut her off, her tone forceful and brooking no argument. "You can't get anything done until you've made a full recovery."
At the next moment, she gazed at the stubborn look on Annie's face and suddenly winked at her.
She turned and walked into her own office without another word.
Annie sat there, feeling stunned. Linda had always been stern and impartial. Rules meant everything to her, and yet she actually broke them again and again for her.
Soon, Gary appeared behind the gate. "Ms. Steward?"
His face lit with surprise when he saw her. He quickly opened the door. "What brought you home? You should've let us know first."
"I missed Grandma, so I came back," Annie said, putting on a somewhat forced smile.
"Mrs. Steward Senior is in the rear courtyard's greenhouse, tending to flowers. Head on in. She'll be thrilled to see you."
Annie nodded, crossed the courtyard, and headed toward the back. The afternoon sun was just right, casting warm and gentle rays. Irene wore glasses as she held a small pair of scissors, focused on trimming the withered leaves of an orchid.
Hearing footsteps, she looked up and saw it was Annie. The wrinkles on her face blossomed into a smile.
"Ann? What brought you here today?"
