From the day she went to the military kindergarten as a child, all the way to living in the Oswald’s residence.
For 20 years, they had never spent a single day apart.
A bond this deep made Edmund even believe that, even if the whole world abandoned him, Josephine never would.
He was lost in thought when the hospital room door opened again.
Diana arrived, bringing Stephen with her.
She flung herself into Edmund’s arms, her hands gently touching his face. “You fainted–it scared me so much! Steve was all alone, so I went back to get him and brought him here.”
Edmund glanced at his parents‘ increasingly grim expressions and gently pushed her away.
“These are my parents. Don’t-”
Diana seemed to notice Peter and Fiona for the first time and quickly straightened up.
“Hello. I’m Diana… I’m Commander Oswald’s-”
Fiona’s eyes narrowed instantly, cutting her off.

Chapter 10
“You were the bridesmaid at Eddy and Josie’s engagement party,
right? Then you’re just Josie’s friend. As for you and Eddy… you’re not even friends.”
The room instantly fell into awkward silence.
Only Stephen’s clear, childish voice broke through. “Who said Dad – and Diana aren’t friends? I even saw them sleeping together!”
Peter slammed his cane against the floor.
“Take Steve out, Fiona. I need to talk to Edmund.”
One by one, the others left the room. Edmund felt uneasy. He had just opened his mouth to say “Dad” when Peter slapped him across the face.
“Don’t call me ‘Dad.’ How could I have a son who betrays his own family like you?”
His thin fingers shook as he pointed at Edmund. “I won’t even mention what Josie’s parents have done for our family. You’ve been married to her for so long–how could you be so foolish?”
Edmund lowered his head, his mind a complete mess.
How had things suddenly gotten so out of control?
All he could think about was where Josephine had gone with the child. “Dad, I’ll bring Josie back.”
He stumbled to his feet, rushed downstairs, and got into his Jeep.

Chapter 10
As he drove, he tried to calm himself. “Josephine is just throwing a tantrum,” he told himself.
She had broken up with him many times–but hadn’t she always waited at the train station with a ticket, letting him come find her?
A few apologies, a few sweet words… and everything was back to normal.
