Chapter 12
A wave of weakness washed over Edmund, and his eyes reddened.
Why blame Stephen? If there was anyone to blame, it was himself–for knowing about Stephen’s problems all along and still choosing to ignore them.
That was why Josephine had felt so suffocated, why she had left with such finality!
When Diana walked in, her face was covered in exquisite makeup, her body carrying a pungent scent of perfume, and her hair had clearly just been permed.
She sat down in Edmund’s lap, her tone laced with dissatisfaction about the daytime events.
“Your parents were complaining about me, so I just went on a bit of retaliatory spending to make myself happy.”
“Eddy, you have to be on my side.”
In the past, he would certainly have felt guilty for not giving her a proper status and would have felt deeply sorry for her.
But now Edmund only pinched the bridge of his nose, his irritation growing heavier.
He had been hospitalized twice, and Diana not showing concern would have been one thing.

Yet she still had to compete with his parents for dominance.
Edmund pushed her away and stared at the new clothes she had bought.
“Where did you go? Do you know Steve hasn’t eaten all day?”
Edmund’s words brought a flash of impatience to Diana’s face, but she quickly reined it in and spoke gently: “How would I know how to take care of a child? We both have our own careers. Eddy, you understand me, don’t you?”
Diana’s words were like a heavy hammer, slamming mercilessly into Edmund’s heart.
Scenes from the past played over and over in Edmund’s mind like a
movie.
When Josephine had just given birth, she learned tips on caring for a baby from the neighbors.
At night, so as not to disturb his rest, she would even hold the baby by herself in the dead of night, coaxing the child to sleep.
When his training missions were demanding, Josephine would bury herself in the kitchen, trying every possible way to cook meals that were gentle on his stomach.
She had once been a dancer as well, a woman who had shone brightly on the stage..
Because she was with him, she had turned into a housewife who only revolved around the stove.

Only then did Edmund realize that for all these years, he had been enjoying her youth as it burned away for his sake.
Yet all he had seen was her exhaustion and dullness, even thinking that Josephine belonged only in the kitchen.
Edmund could not wait any longer.
