Chapter 13
Josephine got into the car, and the moment she saw Kolton Clark, she felt as though a lifetime had passed.
In her previous life, she had deliberately avoided meeting him and only remembered that Kolton had lived alone overseas, never marrying for his entire life.
A sharp pain shot through her arm again, but she could not spare a moment to bandage it.
She had to go to San Francisco and take Jesslyn away.
“Josie, I have already investigated everything. Six years ago, Jesslyn was sent to the village and handed over to a farm woman named Gianna Miller to be raised.”
Kolton sighed and handed the photographs to Josephine.
“Gianna was most likely instigated by someone. For the past six years, she has constantly beaten and scolded Jesslyn. Don’t worry, we’ll be there very soon.”
Josephine looked at the photo of Jesslyn squatting by the river, washing clothes, her hands covered in chilblains.
All these years, she had treated Stephen as her own biological son. With Edmund doting on him as well, Stephen had long been spoiled into a little tyrant.

Yet Jesslyn had been forced to learn farm work on her own at five or six years old, never having enough to eat or enough to wear.
Her heart felt as though it was breaking.
Josephine stared anxiously ahead as the car drove into that household.
The small girl was kneeling at the doorway while Gianna lashed her back with a whip used for driving livestock.
“You wretched little brat, you even dared to steal white sugar! Do you deserve to eat it? Even your own parents didn’t want you. I’m the one kind enough to raise you and give you a bite to eat, and you still dare
to steal!”
Gianna raised the whip again, only for her wrist to be seized tightly by Kolton.
“Just because you give her a bite to eat, that gives you the right to abuse her?”
The people Kolton brought immediately surrounded the yard. Gianna had never seen such a scene before and was so frightened that she dropped to her knees at once.
“I… I was just doing it for someone else…”
With a mournful expression, she glanced to the side and caught sight of Josephine standing there.
“Mrs. Oswald, it’s me! Don’t you remember me? This is all just u misunderstanding!”

Chapter 13
Josephine looked at Gianna’s face and felt that it seemed somewhat familiar.
She was actually the midwife Edmund had found for her on the day she gave birth.
No wonder she had been in pain for three days without being able to deliver, and in the end could only be taken to the hospital.
It turned out that she had been a fraud all along.
Kolton saw the anger overflowing in Josephine’s eyes and immediately understood.
“Your mouth doesn’t seem to hold much truth. Teach her a lesson.”
Several people pinned Gianna to the ground and began slapping her repeatedly.
At first, Gianna kept insisting that it had all been Edmund’s idea. By the time the beating ended, her mouth was full of blood, and she had even lost a tooth.
“I’ll talk. It was Diana who told me to find a way to kill this girl, but I didn’t dare. I thought that since her parents didn’t want her anyway, I might as well raise her and marry her off to my foolish son.”
From the moment these people entered the house, Jesslyn had only stared blankly at everything that was happening.
The chaotic scene and Gianna’s wailing pleas did not stir the slightest emotional response in her.

Josephine took a step toward her, and before she could say anything, tears began to fall.
“Are you my mom? Why did it take you so long to come get me?”
Jesslyn’s clear, ringing question cut into Josephine like a knife. She shook her head repeatedly and knelt in front of Jesslyn.
“It’s my fault. I came too late and made you wait for so long.”
She cried so hard that she could barely catch her breath, almost collapsing onto the ground.
“Are you willing to leave here with me? I promise you that I will never abandon you again.”
Josephine carefully gathered Jesslyn into her arms.
