“No.”

Sierra answered Nicholas with a half–truth, but everything she said next was true.

“If John really wants to make things difficult for me, it doesn’t matter which company I join. He can interfere wherever he wants. I might as well stay where I am.”

She knew Nicholas was doing this for her. That was exactly why she did not want him to get dragged into this. Perhaps last night was John’s way of giving her a warning.

Hearing her, Nicholas swallowed all the words down and finally said, “If you ever need anything, call me. I’ll always be there.”

Sierra replied with a soft, “Alright.”

When she reached the company, she focused on her own work. Her team leader, Jenny, went over a few tasks with her.

After they finished talking business, Jenny asked, “They didn’t give you a hard time at dinner last night, did they?”

Sierra shook her head. “No.”

Jenny nodded slightly. “Good. Work hard, then.”

Sierra answered, “Alright.”

John didn’t show up once the whole day. Sierra had been on edge all morning, worried he would try something. By late afternoon, she finally relaxed when she still had not seen him at all and dedicated herself completely to the project.

Close to the end of the workday, a new message appeared in the group chat for work.

Ivan: [I’ll be on a business trip for two months. During this period, everyone will report their work directly to Mr. Henderson instead of going through me.]

Everyone in the group replied with an okay.

Sierra frowned at once.

Jenny noticed her reaction and thought she was frightened by John’s presence. She tried to comfort her.

“For our team, I’ll put everything together and hand it to Mr. Henderson. Once you finish your work, just pass it to me.”

Sierra was just going to respond with an “okay” when another message from Ivan popped up.

The whole department blew up.

Most people had just been reassigned from other finished projects and knew very well what their own team leaders were like. Now that they all had to report alone, it was enough to rattle everyone.

Jenny was silent.

Sierra was silent, too.

“So just because this is a highest–priority project, we all have to report to Mr. Henderson one by one?”

“Just kill me now! People online say the boss of Henderson Group is really strict.”

Complaints filled the entire department, and Sierra cursed with them in her heart.

She settled down again soon. She had confidence in her own ability. Even if John picked at every little thing, he couldn’t push back the deadline. If the project really ended up a loss…

Just then, a new text appeared on her phone. It was from John.

[I keep my word. You finished that bottle of wine. I won’t deliberately make things hard for you at work.]

Sierra tried to recall what had happened the night before, but her mind was blank.

From what he said, did she really finish the drink?

She didn’t reply or ask anything. If she questioned him, she would be admitting that she had forgotten everything from last night. If he decided to go back on his word, she wouldn’t even know how to argue with him.

She adjusted her mood and continued working.
