Chapter 11

Sierra set her car keys down before walking over and greeting Danny and Agnes.

“Dad, Mom.”

“Who are you calling Dad and Mom?” Agnes snapped, her expression sharp and unpleasant. Even the elegant dress she was wearing didn’t lessen her harshness.

Sierra didn’t get upset, either.

She had always known that Danny and Agnes never liked her. Over the years, she hadn’t spent much time with them. Partly because John didn’t want her to be treated badly, and partly because John himself wasn’t close with his parents. Other than New Year’s dinner, they had barely interacted.

“Where’s John?” Danny asked, his expression stern and commanding.

Maybe because she was feeling rebellious, or maybe she just didn’t care anymore, Sierra simply answered, “I don’t know.”

“I heard you two are getting divorced?” Danny looked up, his presence intimidating.

Sierra instinctively glanced upstairs. Sensing her thoughts, Danny explained, “Tommy’s not home. I had someone take him out

for a while. He’ll be back in an hour.”

As soon as he finished, Sierra’s phone buzzed with a message from Tommy.

“Why did you bother telling her so much?” Agnes had no patience left, and her gaze had nothing but disdain. “Let’s not beat around the bush. We’re here for one reason. After your divorce, who gets the boy?”

Sierra’s hand tightened.

Holly had just warned her, and it was already happening.

“Him.” Sierra didn’t want any extra trouble.

Given how strained John’s relationship with his parents was, he probably hadn’t told them anything. If she said Tommy was staying with her, they would never let her see her son again.

“Then explain this.” Danny produced a copy of the divorce agreement.

Sierra took it and saw that it was identical to the one they’d filed.

How did they get this?

“I don’t know what you did to get John to give you custody of Tommy, but now you need to give him back,” Danny said forcefully. “He’s a Henderson. He won’t go with an outsider.”

Sierra shot back, “If his own mother is an outsider, then what does that make you two?”

“Sierra, I’m trying to be reasonable here. Don’t push your luck,” Danny said, his patience thinning.

Sierra had never liked how overbearing, they were. “I’m Tommy’s mother. I have every right to take him with me.”

“You don’t even have a job. How are you going to support him?” Agnes sneered, looking down on her.

“I didn’t have a job before because I worked at home. Nobody counts that as a real job, and nobody paid me a salary for it,” Sierra replied. She was well protected, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t make any good judgment calls at all. “I’ll find work and get paid after this.”

“So what?” Agnes’s contempt was obvious.

Sierra looked up and met her gaze.

Agnes mocked, “The money you make won’t even buy Tommy a single outfit.”

“Custody goes to us,” Danny said after a moment of silence, his voice carrying real authority. “Name your price.”

Watching them, Sierra was more certain than ever that Tommy couldn’t grow up in such a home.

After a moment, she tossed the problem back at them, making sure they would never be able to pay her price.

“Give me all of John’s shares in the Henderson Group.”

“In your dreams!” Agnes snapped, thinking she was just after their money.
