John froze. “Who was it?”

“Holly Sanders’s father.” Pamela watched John’s face, worried she would see disgust or rejection there. “Jason Sanders.”

John raised his eyes, gaze settling on her.

Pamela’s fingers locked together. “That’s what my mom told me.”

He was surprised for a moment, then his expression went calm again as he asked rationally, “Does he know you exist?”

“He doesn’t.” Pamela thought of what he had told her before and decided to tell him everything. “When he found out my mom was pregnant, he gave her a lot of money to get an abortion. My mom said a fetus is a life too, and hid it from him. She never went for the abortion.”

In truth, it had nothing to do with cherishing life.

She had simply seen how generous Jason Sanders was. He had tossed out a hundred thousand dollars just for an abortion. Clearly, he wasn’t someone ordinary. She wanted to keep the baby as her hope for the future, a chance to rise through her daughter one day.

Later, she found out that Jason had zero tolerance for this kind of thing. If he ever discovered someone had secretly had his child, the consequences would be very dire.

By then, Pamela had already been born.

Afraid of trouble, her mother had never told anyone about it.

“You want to acknowledge him as your father?” John said, reading her expression.

“Can I?” Pamela asked.

“I’ll have Robin arrange a priority paternity test,” John said. “When the result comes out, I’ll take you to see him.”

“Will Sierra be upset?” Pamela hesitated. “Holly is her friend. If I suddenly show up at the Sanders residence…”

“Don’t worry about that.” John’s tone stayed indifferent.

Meanwhile, Sierra had no idea her best friend was about to walk into the lowest point of her life.

After leaving the Lane residence, she went to the hospital and stayed with her mother for half a day before going home.

When she walked in, she saw Holly sitting on the balcony, clearly in a bad mood.

Sierra put her purse down and walked over. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Holly stared out the window, her voice calm. “My dad just called and said I might have a younger sister.”

Sierra blinked.

“You said that for two years, your parents haven’t…”

Right there, she realized something.

A little uncertain, she asked, “You mean this sister isn’t your mom’s daughter?”

Holly sounded distracted as she answered, “Yeah.”

She knew the basic situation of Holly’s parents. It was a business marriage with no love. After Holly was born, they had agreed to live their own lives separately.

“Agreements don’t mean anything,” Holly said, feeling awful.

Sierra wrapped her arms around her.

Holly pushed her away and looked straight at her, unusually serious. “He said one more thing.”

Sierra felt frustrated on Holly’s behalf. “What is it?”

“He said we both know her, and she’s not much younger than me.” Holly still couldn’t think of anyone.
