Pamela finally worked her way around to the real thing she wanted to ask John. “Can I ask you a question?”

“Go ahead,” John said.

Pamela wrapped her fingers together, as if she had made a huge decision. “Do you want Sierra to come back to you and give up on divorcing you?”

“Yes,” John answered without a hint of hesitation.

When Pamela first went after him, he had told her clearly that he had a wife and that he wouldn’t ask Sierra for a divorce because of her.

Even so, Pamela still insisted on making him her boyfriend.

John’s first reaction had been to refuse.

Until she said that one line.

The one line he couldn’t turn down.

“Actually, I know you do certain things on purpose for Sierra to see.” Pamela stopped pretending and played her trump card.

After John had said he could accept her no matter how rotten her intentions were, she decided to change her approach.

“You want her to feel she’s losing out by leaving you. You want her to believe that only by staying with you can she have your

favor.”

John stayed silent.

That was what he had in mind, and he knew Pamela understood that. The whole thing was an open scheme that they chose to go along with.

“I’m willing to help you,” Pamela said immediately. “As long as you keep caring about me and looking after me.”

John looked at Pamela, his eyes as calm and deep as the abyss. He knew this was all part of Pamela’s scheme, that she wanted to use it to go after Sierra.

But he really did need something to give Sierra a push, something that would force her to see clearly what her life would be like without him.

He had promised he wouldn’t target Sierra on purpose, but Pamela’s actions were another matter entirely. They weren’t something he could control.

“Take care of it, then,” John said, giving her permission. Half a month’s worth of cooling period had already passed, and he really couldn’t drag it out any longer. “At least for now, I’m on your side.”

Pamela finally heaved a sigh of relief, her anxiety cased.

“Just one thing,” John added, as if something had just come to mind.

Pamela pressed down her excitement. “Say it.”

“No matter what you do to her, don’t inflict any real physical harm on her or put her life in danger.”

John still remembered the way Sierra had injured herself with a scalpel at the hospital out of spite. Even though she was scared of pain, she did it anyway.

“Relax, I know what I’m doing,” Pamela answered.

It didn’t take long for Kenneth to learn about all this. He asked John out for a drink. When they met, he asked about how things went between him and Sierra.

John tossed out a few casual lines.

When Kenneth realized their relationship was getting worse and worse, he started to worry for John. “From what you’re saying, the two of you are pretty much done, right“?

“I spoiled her too much before. I just need to change tactics,” John said lightly.
