“I’m a little curious how he feels now that he knows I turned him down,” Eagon said as he unlocked his phone and sent a message to John.
Solomon’s pale lips formed into a smile. “He won’t feel anything at all, most likely.”
Eagon stared for a moment before asking, “How is that possible?” (1
In the end, the one who understood John best was still Solomon.
Before noon, John left Origin Games and went back to Henderson Group to chair an important meeting. By the time he received the message, the meeting was already over, and he was in his spacious office discussing work with Kenneth.
Kenneth glanced at the screen and asked, “You want to check that message first?”
John’s expression didn’t change. “It’s from Eagon.”
“What did he say?” Kenneth asked.
“He turned down my proposal.” John only skimmed it with the corner of his eye, but took in every word. “He refused to fire
Sierra.”
“He sided with Solomon. If he really did what you asked and fired Sierra, that would be the same as betraying his own brother.” Kenneth saw the key point clearly and laid it out for John.
John was still flipping through the project details on the table. “I know.”
“Then why’d you go to him?” Kenneth couldn’t figure it out.
John had known it wouldn’t end the way he wanted. It wasn’t like him to do something that wouldn’t yield anything.
“I wanted to test how important Gabrielle really is to him,” John said slowly, completely calm, “so I’ll be prepared if things go
south later on.”
“But he said no,” Kenneth reminded him.
John’s dark eyes met his. “Do you know why I never take your advice on relationships?”
“Because you think I’m always wrong,” Kenneth answered with a straight face.
“In your opinion, does Eagon care about Gabrielle or not?” John’s tone was casual, but his eyes were entirely serious.
“Not much,” Kenneth answered based on what he had seen. “If he really cared, he wouldn’t have fought her for Eden. And he wouldn’t have left her out there all these years without bringing her back.”
Eagon’s mess was pretty serious. Even someone like Kenneth, who was living overseas back then, knew it inside and out.
“That’s exactly why I don’t listen to you about feelings,” John said. “You just don’t get it.”
Kenneth was stunned.
“If he really didn’t care about Gabrielle, he wouldn’t have reacted that strongly when I mentioned her, and he wouldn’t have taken so long to answer such a simple question,” John went on.
Kenneth wanted to argue, but he couldn’t find a footing. “What if you’re wrong?”
“These days, Solomon’s been using his resources to look into Gabrielle,” John said.
“So?” Kenneth pressed.
John stopped saying anything after that. A range of feelings flickered across his face as he looked at Kenneth.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Kenneth pushed.
“With Eagon’s abilities, he can dig up plenty on his own,” Johan said.
