Pamela answered vaguely on purpose. “She used to be very well off, but after her family went bankrupt, things stopped going

her way.”

Cindy had a moment of realization.

When Cindy met Sierra for the first time, she had already thought Sierra must have been raised in wealth and comfort. Her skin was fair, and she had a refined aura surrounding her. She seemed to take everything in stride, too.

“Don’t gossip at the office,” Pamela said once she saw Cindy had put the pieces together. “Sierra isn’t exactly wrong about that.”

“Alright.” Cindy nodded.

Sierra had no idea Pamela had just exposed her family’s situation. When she came back from the hospital, she noticed that Cindy was looking at her a little strangely, but she was buried in work and did not pay much attention.

During the break, Jenny came over. “Pick a time for an onboarding dinner. It should take about half a day.”

Sierra blinked.

“An onboarding dinner,” Jenny explained. “We have one every time someone new joins.”

“Can I skip it?” Sierra was still haunted by what happened at the last dinner.

“Sure,” Jenny answered honestly. “But you get half a day off, and the company pays for the meal. They’ve been asking me when you’ll be free.”

Sierra fell quiet.

From the way it sounded, everyone wanted to go. She was sure they weren’t looking forward to the dinner, but they were looking forward to the half–day off.

Sometimes, it wasn’t good for her when the company benefits were too generous.

“If you really want to skip it, I’ll simply say your project schedule is too tight,” Jenny said, seeing how torn Sierra was.

She figured that something had happened at the last dinner.

“They won’t complain if I frame it that way.”

Sierra’s eyes brightened. “Thanks, I really appreciate it.”

Jenny was not only her team lead, but she was also one of the main people in charge of the project. That was why everyone listened to her.

Things didn’t go the way they wanted, though.

Right after Jenny talked to her, Pamela posted a notice in the group chat.

The general gist of it was that since the anniversary party would be held next Wednesday, everyone was given Monday and Tuesday off. Monday would be for team building, Tuesday for an onboarding dinner. At the end, she added that they rented a luxury villa for the event.

As soon as that message popped up, the chat exploded with excitement.

Nothing makes people happier than not having to go to work.

Sierra felt a wave of despair. If it wasn’t because the rational part of her was holding her back, she would have put in a leave request right then and there.

“Is this Ivan’s idea or Mr. Henderson’s?”

“Don’t celebrate too soon. If we don’t finish this week’s workload, get ready to be scolded in the meeting later.”

The Friday afternoon meeting arrived. As all kinds of emotions were present.

Everyone in the department sat in the conference room. At three thirty in the evening, John walked in. Even though they had already known him for several days, people still felt nervous every time they saw him.
