Chapter 142
John didn’t even frown as Sierra bit his arm.
For a brief moment, he began to wonder if destroying his relationship with Sierra for the sake of a promise had been a mistake, especially when he saw her breaking down like this.
Yet, if even he stopped holding on to that, wouldn’t it mean his parents had been right all along?
No one knew how much time had passed.
Sierra finally stopped venting.
John was still holding her, and his tone was warmer than anything else she had heard in the past. “You only bit the left side. Not going to make it match on the right side?”
Sierra’s eyes suddenly went red, and her nose burned.
John was awful. He had betrayed the love they once had.
John was also good. He understood what she needed and what she thought. The two sides could not be separated because they were both traits of this same man holding her now.
John let her go. He raised his hand and used his finger to wipe the tears from her face. His movements were extremely gentle, as if he were handling some rare and precious treasure.
Looking at the same patient and gentle man as before, Sierra felt even more suffocated.
Yet she knew there was no way back for them. From the day he got together with Pamela, there had never been any possibility for them to be together again.
* “John Henderson,” Sierra called his name.
John’s voice was soft and gentle. “Yeah?”
“Can you please stop making things difficult for me?” Sierra was really exhausted. The emotions she showed most days were only there so she could keep on going in this game of life. “I’m really scared that I won’t be able to hold on one day…”
John’s hand paused as he wiped away her tears. “I haven’t made things hard for you these past few days.”
“What about in the future?” Sierra asked.
After a brief silence, John replied, “You know how I do things.”
From that line, Sierra understood his answer, and her heart sank again. As long as she didn’t return to his side, he could decide everything based on his mood.
“I get it,” she finally said.
“Sierra.” John sensed the shift in her mood.
Sierra said nothing more and stepped back.
The slight motion tugged at John’s heartstrings. His eyebrows subtly furrowed.
“Sorry, Mr. Henderson.” Sierra looked at the damp patch she had left on his shirt and raised her guard up again.” For getting your shirt dirty.”

John let out a short, angry laugh.
She used him and tossed him aside just like that… What did she take him for? Who had spoiled her into this habit?
Then, he remembered he was the one who had spoiled her so much. The warmth faded from his eyes as he locked his gaze on her. “Who taught you to apologize like that?”
Sierra’s emotions retreated like the tide, and she returned to her usual distance. “What do you want, sir?”
Sir?
Those words really got John fired up.
She had just been in his arms, crying and begging him not to make things harder for her. And now, she was speaking to him like this.
He took a step toward her, lowering his eyes and looking at the lips that had never said anything nice. He then slowly said, “This is what I want.”
Before Sierra could react, he lowered his head and held the back of her head as he kissed her. The moment his lips touched her soft ones, the fury in his chest found an outlet and eased.
