“It doesn’t matter anymore,” Sierra said as she raised her guard again. “All I need to know is that you plan to take care of her for the rest of your life and you want me to accept her existence.”

John’s eyes grew darker.

She was right. There was no way to argue that.

“Tommy’s getting up soon,” Sierra said as she glanced at the time and met his eyes again. “Move.”

“You really haven’t changed at all. You exploit someone and then discard them just as easily,” John said as he pulled his hand back and stopped blocking her.

Instead, he walked over to the couch at an easy pace.

Sierra did not answer him.

When the warmth and presence in front of her disappeared, something in her chest shifted despite herself. She was about to go to the bedroom to check on Tommy when she heard the door open.

A moment later, Tommy came running out on his short stubby legs, already dressed. His childish voice called out, “Mom.”

“You’re up.” Sierra calmed herself down and ruffled his hair. “Go brush your teeth and wash your face. Dad brought you breakfast.”

Tommy glanced at the man sitting calmly on the couch.

He didn’t greet him.

Seeing this, John suddenly remembered how people used to say Tommy”s temper was just like his. But when it came to holding a grudge, he was acting just like Sierra.

By the time Tommy finished washing up, it was already about seven. He sat at the table and ate breakfast with them, but he only spoke with Sierra throughout the whole meal. He didn’t say a single word to John.

“Mom, I don’t want to go to the amusement park anymore,” Tommy suddenly said.

“Why not?” Sierra asked in a gentle voice.

Tommy lowered his head. He didn’t know how to explain it.

He didn’t want the day, which he had been looking forward to, to be ruined by a mere phone call. He knew how much his dad cared about Pamela. If she called, his dad would definitely leave with her.

When that happened, his mom would feel upset. He didn’t want his mom to have to cheer him up when she was already unhappy.

“I’ll be spending my time with you only,” John said. He had already figured out what Tommy was worried about.

Tommy finally looked at him properly. His eyes held some complicated feelings. “Is that a promise, or are you just saying it?”
