Chapter 147
For the first time, Sierra truly experienced what it felt like when people said, “So what if you’re rich?”
“It is getting late. Let’s eat something first,” John said indifferently, still holding Tommy’s hand.
Sierra glanced at the trash can.
Tommy reached out with his other hand to take hers, pulling her attention back. “Mom, let’s go already.”
Sierra let out a slow sigh. “Sure.”
The three of them went to a restaurant near the amusement park and took a table by the window, where they could see the whole park and the lake in the distance.
Throughout the meal, John would chat with Tommy from time to time, as if that phone call earlier had been nothing but an illusion.
It made Sierra wonder.
Was Pamela’s car accident even real?
“You’re zoning out,” John said when he noticed she had barely eaten.
Sierra looked at him. There was no trace of worry in his eyes. He seemed no different from usual.
She stopped thinking about it, picked up her fork, and started eating. Whether the car accident was something real or not had nothing to do with her. She just needed to live her own life.
John found her reaction a little strange. She would sometimes zone out, sometimes think about something deeply, as if something serious was weighing on her.
“Dad.” After a few bites, Tommy was already full. He looked at John with his big eyes. “Can we go play in the escape room together later?”
John instinctively glanced at Sierra. “Ask your mom.”
Tommy turned his head toward her.
Sierra wanted to refuse, but since it was a rare Youth Day outing, she agreed. “Alright.”
In the past, whenever they played escape rooms, she would always hide in John’s arms. She was the classic player who was too scared to play but still played it anyway.
Now that there was no one she could lean on,there were some fears she had to face sooner or later. She couldn’t stay terrified of things like this forever.
Tommy’s fork paused. He was only testing John’s reaction, but he didn’t expect Sierra to agree.
It was almost time to start.
Tommy wanted Sierra to wait outside while he and John played. But as soon as he said it, Sierra took his hand and walked together inside.
“For what? Do you really think I’m that timid?”
“No…”

“I’ll lead you through the clues later and show you a different side of your mom.”
Seeing how serious she was, Tommy nodded. “Okay!”
But the moment they stepped into the escape room, the creepy setting and eerie lighting made her back go tight, and her heart beat nervously.
When she remembered her bold declaration earlier, she forced herself to move and search for clues.
When she was little, she had been afraid of water, so she pushed herself to learn to swim until the fear was gone. Later, she was terrified of mice and roaches, so Holly had thrown two right in front of her, and she adapted through sheer force of will.
This was the same.
She could handle it.
“Mom.” Tommy sensed her tension and tugged her hand. “How about I do it?”
“I’ll do it.” Sierra pressed down the pounding in her chest and forced herself into the right mindset.
Sierra really was quite brutal at times. Even when she was scared, she still gritted her teeth and cleared every level, finally reaching the exit with Tommy. The moment they stepped back into the light, the fear that had been clinging to her the whole way seemed to finally ease.
Tommy gave her a big thumbs–up. “Mom, you’re amazing.‘

Sierra smiled, and she looked especially pretty that way. “I’m your mom, after all. How can I not be amazing?”
Watching the two of them praising each other, John’s eyes grew darker, something complicated surging in the depths of his eyes. He had seen just how scared Sierra was at the beginning.
She had almost thrown herself toward him in fright more than once, only to stop herself at the very last second.
