Chapter 148
John had watched Sierra go from being terrified to forcing herself to face her fears. He saw her clearly being afraid, yet she still pushed herself to win in the end.
That kind of growth didn’t make him happy.
He knew very well that if he didn’t find ways to keep her by his side, then she would one day overcome all the discomfort she felt and finally leave him for good.
That was an outcome he didn’t want and could never accept.
“Dad.” Tommy was about to share something, but then he noticed the look in his father’s eyes as he watched his mom. “You look kind of left out. Are you angry about it?”
Sierra looked up, her eyes running right into John’s dark gaze.
“Yeah.” John glanced at her, then looked away. He then asked in a half–serious and half–joking tone, “Are you going to cheer Dad up?”
Tommy turned him down without mercy. “Nope.”
Tommy and Sierra had fun together all afternoon while John spent the whole time carrying their bags and holding their things, acting as their assistant.
When they got home after dinner and Tommy lay in bed, about to sleep, he was still thinking about the fun he had with his parents that day.
At the same time, he knew that once he fell asleep, his dad would go to that other woman.
Sierra got Tommy to sleep right on time at nine. She closed his door and walked back out.
When she saw John still sitting in the living room, she told him, “Tommy’s asleep. You can go now.”
John lifted his wrist and checked the time. “The day’s not over yet.”
Sierra fell silent.
Sensing how stubborn he was, she chose to ignore him. She went to the chair in the corner of the living room and sat down. Then, she opened her laptop and started working on the illustrations for her freelance work.
However, John’s presence was too strong. His gaze was fixed on her so intently that she could feel his eyes on her even with her back to him.
She was about to send him out again when his phone rang.
He looked at the screen, then answered, his voice low and serious. “What is it?”
Kenneth’s voice, laced with annoyance, came through. “I sent you so many messages, and you didn’t reply. Did you even look at them?”
“Not yet,” John said.
Kenneth pressed his fingers to his temples, his whole head buzzing, as he repeated what he had already sent.” Pamela’s surgery finished at two this afternoon. Everything went well. She woke up an hour ago.”
“Got it.” John’s tone was indifferent.

Kenneth couldn’t make sense of it. “That’s it?“.
John didn’t answer. There were some things he couldn’t tell him.
“She woke up asking her friend where you were,” Kenneth went on. “When she didn’t see you, she just fell apart. I thought you cared about her. Why didn’t you show up when she got in a car accident?”
He was still in bed when John called and told him to go to the hospital to check on Pamela’s condition.
