Chapter 149
John said nothing and didn’t move.
When Sierra saw that he remained silent, she pushed the words that had reached her throat back in. She picked up the headphones beside her and put them on, shutting the world out.
Time slipped by, minute by minute. Soon it was 11.59 p.m.
John watched the stopwatch on his wrist. When the second hand swept up to twelve, he grabbed his phone and car keys, then stood up and left. The door closed with a bang.
Hearing the sound, Sierra glanced at the time on her screen. Nine seconds past midnight. She ignored it and continued to work on her illustration.
As for John, Robin was already waiting by the car when he went downstairs.
John tossed him the keys and got in. His back rested against the seat as he asked in a cool voice, “What did you find out?”
“As you expected, sir, the crash was deliberate,” Robin said, getting into the driver’s seat with a file in his hand. ” After you left Lakeside Villa, she followed you. She didn’t leave until you and the madam took the young master to the amusement park.”
A chill spread through the air around John.
He had always known Pamela was a schemer and liked to play games, but he hadn’t expected her to treat her own body like it meant nothing.
“This is the full video before the impact to the moment of the crash,” Robin said, passing John his work phone.
John played the video.
In it, Pamela chose a busy stretch of road and suddenly ran straight out into traffic. There was a dull thud from the screen. The next frame showed Pamela run over by a car.
John’s already tired expression morphed into a hard frown, his dark eyes turning colder than ice buried under the polar snow. The pressure in the car dropped in an instant.
“To the hospital.”
Robin started the engine at once.
Pamela had no idea John knew every detail of her ploy. When midnight came and he still had not shown up despite Kenneth already leaving, her emotions grew more and more unstable.
She picked up her phone to call John.
Nora stopped her. “What are you doing?”
“It is already past midnight.” Pamela felt pain in every spot on her body, but none of it compared to the ache in her heart. “Even if he had to stay with that kid all day, he should be here by now!”
Nora felt Pamela was losing it and took the phone from her hand. “If he’s coming to see you, he’ll come without you calling. If he isn’t, it doesn’t matter how many times you call him.”
“It has to be because Sierra is stopping him! That’s why he isn’t here yet,” Pamela said, unable to accept it. “That must be it!”

She reached for the phone again. Nora didn’t want to give it back, but fearing that Pamela would pull out the IV in her hand as she struggled, Nora finally let her have it.
The first call didn’t go through.
For the second call, Pamela used a different number.
Seeing an unfamiliar call, Sierra hesitated for a moment. After it rang five or six times, she answered.
