Chapter 155
When Robin saw the text from Dr. Smith, he immediately called John. However, a mechanical female voice answered instead.
“Hello, the number you have called has been switched off.”
Robin froze.
He hurriedly tried John’s usual number and got the same message. When it turned out the same, his mind went completely blank for a moment.
He ended up calling Dr. Smith to confirm the details.
“How did they leave?”
“By a cab,” Dr. Smith replied.
Robin then hung up. He almost called the bodyguards near Maple Residences to tell them to wake the boss, then remembered John had been up all night.
When they met at noon, John looked almost the same as usual, but Robin could see that something was weighing on him, and his mental state was unstable.
After thinking it over, he decided not to have anyone disturb John.
Sierra had Tommy with her. Even if she found the boss there, it shouldn’t turn into a huge argument.
At this moment, Jol.. was lying on Sierra’s bed in clean pajamas. He pulled her blanket over himself, breathing in the faint, familiar scent that belonged only to her. His gaze swept over the tiny room, which couldn’t have been any smaller.
Then his eyes finally closed, and he fell into a deep sleep.
When Sierra got home, it was already a little after three in the afternoon. She took out the key and unlocked the door, then took Tommy’s shoes out for him to change.
“Go get some rest…”
Her words stopped.
Her eyes had fallen on a pair of men’s slippers she had never seen before.
“Mom?” Tommy called when he saw her pause,
Sierra pressed a finger lightly to his lips for silence. She scanned every corner of the living room. When she didn’t see anyone, she eased Tommy back out into the hallway and quietly closed the door.
Tommy was confused. “What’s wrong?”
“There’s a stranger in our apartment.” Sierra pulled out her phone, ready to call the police. “We need to go downstairs first.”
“How do you know?” Tommy tilted his head, puzzled.
“There’s a pair of men’s slippers by the shoe cabinet.” Sierra kept some men’s slippers at home just in case, but none of them looked like that. “If someone changed into slippers, then most likely he lives in this complex.”

Tommy answered quickly. “They’re Dad’s.”
Sierra blinked.
Tommy explained, “Last time when Mr. Rogers took me back here, he brought me to Dad’s place first. I saw those slippers in his shoe cabinet.”
Sierra’s thumb paused over the screen as doubt flickered in her eyes. “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure.” Tommy nodded.
Sierra opened the door again. Her eyes fell to the spotless men’s slippers. She realized that if it was really a burglar, he wouldn’t have changed shoes, much less lined them up so neatly.
She set her keys aside. Somewhat emotional, she walked toward Tommy’s room. No one.
C
She opened the door to her own bedroom. Of course.
John was stretched out on her bed.
She walked over, ready to yank back the blanket and drag him up, but then she saw the sweat on his forehead, his face pale, and the deep furrow between his brows as if he dreamed of something terrible.
For some reason, Solomon’s words suddenly surfaced in her mind.
John’s childhood.
It wasn’t like they avoided talking about the past in their five years of marriage. But every time that came into conversation, John would brush it off with a single line, saying his childhood had been nothing but endless lessons, meaningless and boring.
⚫ Sierra hadn’t thought much of it then. Now, it seemed his past had not been so simple. Otherwise, Solomon
wouldn’t have brought it up on purpose.
“John…” Sierra started to call him, then hesitated when she saw how bad his sleep quality was and the dark circles under his eyes.
She was still torn between waking him and throwing him out when John opened his eyes, revealing pupils as dark as obsidian.
He looked at her face, filled with mixed feelings. His voice was hoarse from the sleep.
“You’re back?”
