Chapter 187
“I didn’t know that number was hers, either,” Kenneth said to John.
Only now did Kenneth start to piece things together. John had brushed off his earlier question like it was nothing because he had probably turned his phone off or put it on airplane mode in advance.
No one had expected Pamela to call Kenneth instead.
So much for the plan! Everything was a mess now.
“I have to go to the hospital,” John said as he glanced toward the stage where Sierra was playing. “While I’m gone, keep an eye on her. They can make things difficult for her, but don’t let her apologize, back down, or let anyone lay a hand on her.”
Kerfneth was speechless.
How was that any different from not letting her be harassed at all? If it were just people running their mouths, Sierra was strong enough to shrug it off mentally anyway.
Complaints stayed in Kenneth’s head. For something his bro personally asked, he would still take it seriously.” Alright.”
“Don’t show your face,” John added. “Don’t let her think I’m still backing her up.”
“Got it.” Kenneth agreed to everything.
John hummed and nodded as he took out his phone, turned it back on, and headed for the exit.
“Wait.” Kenneth stopped him.
John looked back. “What is it?”
“Doesn’t this feel a little strange to you?” Kenneth frowned, his brain finally kicking into high gear. “How did Pamela get my number? Why call me at a time like this?”
“Someone gave it to her.” John’s eyes were cold, his tone unreadable.
Kenneth was a little surprised. “You know who?”
“Not sure yet.” John sounded indifferent.
From the moment Kenneth handed him the phone, he had known something was off.
“Keep an eye on Sierra. Don’t let anything too serious happen to her.”
John didn’t linger after that, walking away with steady steps. By the time he reached the hospital, an hour had already passed.
Pamela had just completed her last IV for the day. After what happened last time, she no longer bothered to hide her true nature.
“John, you’re here.”
“Yeah.” John pulled a chair and sat by her bed.
“I know I shouldn’t be calling you over at a time like this.” Pamela lay there, her face still a little pale. “But I don’t want you spending time with Sierra while I’m here in the hospital feeling awful.”

John looked at her, his eyes dark and calm.
Pamela didn’t look away. “I’m not jealous. I just don’t want that.”

“How are the wounds?” John ignored everything she had just said. He sounded like he was running through a checklist.
“It’s starting to scab,” Pamela said, sounding a little hurt as she reached out to take his hand. “I didn’t call you for the last two days, and you didn’t come to see me at all. Don’t you care about me?”
“Weren’t you the one who told me to focus on work if I’m busy and just drop by when I have spare time?” John countered.
Under the blanket, Pamela’s other hand slowly curled into a fist.
So… He really didn’t have the slightest bit of feeling for her.
That made her think of what someone had once told her.
“He only understands Sierra’s unspoken words. If you try a similar indirect approach, he’ll just follow your instructions literally, nothing more. If you want something, you’d better just say it straight. Don’t go in circles.”
“I was just venting a little at the moment,” Pamela said, forcing her feelings down. “Have you ever seen a patient who doesn’t want the person they care about to visit and show they care?”
John’s brows furrowed together.
Before he could speak, Pamela continued, “I know what you’re about to say. This is just a reasonable request. It isn’t about love.”
“I’ve been busy lately. If you need anything, just tell me directly like earlier,” John replied flatly, sounding almost like an NPC in a video game. “If I miss something, remind me.“,
Pamela smiled. “Alright.”
