In other words, it was simply too strange for Solomon to have so much concern for Sierra.
“We’re competitors, yes, but we’re also brothers,” Solomon said to Maria, his lips moving slightly. He looked more worried than before as they stood under the streetlight. “It’s only natural for an older brother to worry about his younger brother.”
Sierra still didn’t really believe him.

“If you had seen how he was before all this, you would know why I came to talk to you,” Solomon said, his feelings complicated. “His life has been too hard.”
“You came to me just to say this?” Sierra asked.
“Yes,” Solomon answered.
He took out his phone, scrolled a few times, then opened a photo and handed it to her.
“If you don’t feel anything after you see this, then forget everything I said. From now on, I won’t interfere in anything between you and him.”
Sierra took the phone.
The moment she saw the photo, she felt as if she had been hit in the gut.
In the picture, John looked sixteen or seventeen. He wore a white shirt stained with blood. His hair fell over the corner of his eyes as he sat on the ground, dirty and defeated, his eyes empty and dull, with no trace of life in them at all.
In that instant, her heart felt torn to pieces.
“He…” The word had barely left her lips before she stopped.
John had never liked showing any weakness in front of her. In the five years of their marriage, he had never tried to gain her sympathy. When he made a fuss, it was only because he wanted to tease her.
But…
“This was just before he turned seventeen,” Solomon said as he took the phone back, his voice still gentle. “I can’t tell you what happened. That’s his secret.”
Sierra pursed her lips as they grew pale.
She had asked about John’s past before, but John always brushed it off in a few words. He had never mentioned anything like this.
“John’s not so good when it comes to his own feelings. I hope you can talk to him,” Solomon went on at an even pace. “We’re competitors in terms of business, so we’ll let our skills do the talking. But in private, I want him to have a good life.”
Sierra pulled her emotions back. “You should be saying this to Pamela.”
“In his heart, you’re more important than Pamela,” Solomon said.
Sierra froze.
She couldn’t understand why he would say that.

“To prove it, I set up a small test tonight,” Solomon said, holding his phone as his expression returned to normal. “The result showed I was right.”
Sierra was about to ask what kind of test he meant when he told her, “He should be here in a few minutes.”
Be here?
A few questions arose in Sierra’s mind.
Before she could say anything, the sound of a motorcycle came from a distance, growing closer.
A sleek bike stopped not far from them, and a tall, athletic man got off. He took off his helmet in one smooth motion, and a strikingly handsome face was revealed.
Sierra stared for a second when she realized who it was.
John.
“Do you want to talk to him?” Solomon asked, deliberately moving a little closer to her.
All of Sierra’s attention was on John. She didn’t notice what Solomon did and answered him without thinking. There’s nothing to talk about.”
“Then let’s go back inside,” Solomon said in a usual tone. “The next part of the party will start soon. I won’t keep you long.”
