Sierra knew that one of Solomon’s aims was to use her to strike at John’s heart all over again.
John had always wrapped himself in armor, never willing to show his wounds to anyone.
She wouldn’t be the one to tear his scars open. Once, he had treated her well. She wanted to protect his past. He didn’t need anyone’s sympathy or pity.
John caught her expression and sensed something was off. “Was that all?”
“That’s all,” Sierra answered as she raised her eyes to meet his gaze
Seeing that she didn’t want to say anything anymore, John did not press her. He only reminded her, “You can’t trust Solomon. No matter what he says to you or what he does for you, all of it is so he can get to his aim.”
Sierra said nothing.
She already knew that.
Silence fell between them again.
Sierra wanted to ask if he had been the one to bring Wendy and the others here, but she realized it no longer mattered. Whether he had or not, their marriage was almost over.
“Sir.”
Joven, Solomon’s secretary, walked over and greeted John politely.
He got to the point immediately and said, “My boss has asked you to join him upstairs. He has something to discuss with you.”
John’s expression darkened. He gave Sierra a quick look, then left. He had things he wanted to say as well.
After he left, the tightness in Sierra’s chest eased a little.
She didn’t go back inside right away. Too much had happened tonight, and she needed time to process it. On top of that, she still had to come up with some excuse to hide everything from those in her company.
If she didn’t, the gossip alone would be enough to drown everything out, no matter how hard she worked in the future.
Ten minutes later, Sierra went back in when she had mostly steadied herself. She had barely sat down before her coworkers gathered around her.
“Sierra, you’ve been keeping who you really are a secret!”
“A rich heiress working nine to five!”
“What did Mr. Henderson want with you just now?”
They all asked her questions one after another. They didn’t actually care about the truth. They just liked drama.
